Building coop......question..pics added...

I wouldn't bother bleaching if you're going to use Kilz or other paint on it. I really do not see the point.

I WOULD paint it, too. Bleach will NOT kill all fungus growth in wood.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I agree with CityChook!!! spray it with bleach, let it dry, paint over it with a good primer(like Kilz), and then a nice coat (or 2) of good exterior paint... you can never be too safe when it comes to mold!!!

That's why I wanted to know what to do, I don't want to take any chances with my 'babies'. They are all 1+ yrs but they are still my babies. LOL

Yes. That is why I would not bother with bleach, because properly primed and painted (after letting the wood dry thoroughly!), the problem will be basically solved just from that

Thanks Pat!

I'm just trying to get this up and ready for winter and will then do the cosmetic work in the spring/summer. I still have alot more work before the snow sets in on other 'animal projects' (another shed into a cathouse, and yet another for goats) so time is of the essence. LOL

hi you can use bleach and a brush and let it dry .bleach kills mold or if you go to home depot you can buy the deck wash .it work but not as good as bleach .i would paint it after it dries .looks good and would make a nice coop .

Make sure the mold is completely dead if you stain it with an oil based stain. Most of those stains are made with a vegetable based oil (rosewood, flaxseed etc.) and those oils will feed that mold and cause it to grow like crazy.

A lot of stains also put in mildewicide- but I wouldn't count on it to kill mold- normally it is just used to keep it from growing on the surface of the stained wood. Inhibiting mold- not killing it.

Bleach and a scrub brush on a dry day with a breeze if possible.

I put vinyl siding over mine so that I will never have to work on it again. No regrets. I do have painted trim tho. I put gutter guards on gutters so that iI would not have to go up on ladder to clean them. Site slopes enough that ladder work will be a problem. I used scaffolding that I own to build it. You have nice flat site. You might even be able to build bump-out nest boxes since it is still in the making. Makes for a roomier coop inside for those rainy winter days when they are not out all that much.

My daughter lives near Noblesville, N of Indy.

Thanks for the idea of the bump out nest boxes. I never thought of that. We have four openings for windows and only plan on using two of them. Each one is a good 3'X4' at least. I was planning on putting the two windows in and boarding up the other openings but I will definately rethink using one for a nest box. The other opening I think we were planning on building like a lean to or something off of it for storage.

Instead of bleaching the two plywood boards now we just bought two new ones . When we get a nice warm sunny day (hopefully we will still have a few left) I will go ahead and bleach the two that we had on there and use those for another coop that's in the works. I am still not sure about using siding on this as it will probably get a little costly to do so. They do have some really cool plywood sheets at Lowe's that are painted with camo. I was debating on weather or not I should get those to put on the outside and then just seal them. LOL Instead of going with shingles on the roof I am contemplating using the wavy fiberglass type roof or something tin/metal. Oh well, we have alot of work to do...now we just need the weather to cooperate. It's been pouring on and off all day.

We have the roof up but need to get the two windows in and cover up the other two. So much for drying out....

Noblesville isn't that far from us, maybe an hour if that. We've been there many times for soccer and a few other things.
