Building my first coop! - progress thread

Definitely good for your kids future!
You'll have to teach your girls how to handle the gender bigotry ;)
I had hard time learning that, then got good at it, now facing more again due to being an 'old' woman.
I have a girl and a boy, which is perfect and makes it easier to teach the lesson. I just treat them the same and so far they don't notice any differences (in ability and who gets to do what, at least). I showed them how to use the nail gun and they both enjoyed nailing the OSB to the frame, especially the girl. I hope their world is less bigoted with the new generations. And yes, ageism is another side of it...

Sounds like the perfect scenario to plan those other chicken things!
Yes, definitely. The rush was to get the roof done because of the rain, now we have time to plan and finish the rest of it (and discuss it over a cup of pretend tea ). The kids will help, too. We'll go to the woods and pick out thick branches for roosts, stumps for the run etc. It will be great.

Well, the world might not be, but your kids will have an awareness..and that always good! How old are they?

I think the world will be, too. It's already a lot more accepting now than it was a few decades ago. A few more decades and it will be even better. Small steps, yes, but we're headed in the right direction. Last week we saw an older woman firefighter. How cool is that? Not something you would've seen several decades ago. A few months ago we even saw a woman roofer in our neighborhood (my daughter was absolutely delighted and wanted to climb up and give her a hug). We're getting there.
My daughter is 5 and my son is 3.

A tip to future roof builders: I wish I found out sooner, but it turns out it's really easy, quick, clean and convenient to cut shingles with tin snips! In the instructional videos I watched, the roofers cut the shingles with a utility knife, which is what I did at first. It certainly works, but it's a bit frustrating. Towards the end of installing my shingles I realized I could cut them with the tin snips and oh man the difference that made! It's like scissors! I recommend it.

I think it's awesome when parents teach there kids life skills, male or female. Keep up the good work!

Here’s my plan for ventilation. The long walls (7 feet) will each have a 6-inch-tall vent opening across the whole wall at the top, like this:

The wall with the human door will have the spaces between the rafters open, plus some more space between the level of the rafters and the level of the top of the door, like this:

And the fourth wall will only have the spaces between the rafters open:

That one is the north wall, so I didn’t want much open on that side, as that’s the main wind direction in the winter. It’s also the bottom of the roof slope and the overhang slopes down over the gap, so I’m hoping it will be okay in the winter.

I may give some (or all?) of the vents closeable flaps to give myself more options... like for storms... Or is that not necessary? What do you guys think about my ventilation overall?
