irinuca, the lid will give the hens more of a "dark space" in which to hide so they can lay. But I also wanted to be able to clean the nests out thoroughly if need be, which is why I made the lid on the hinges (I added two extra hinges towards either end for added support). The eggs are supposed to roll backwards into the tray/trough, so I can collect them without having to get into each nest multiple times a day. I'm hoping to avoid poopy eggs and also egg eating... and in that matter I will be making one more modification of a rounded out edge on the inside of each nest that will keep the eggs out of reach from the hens. Will post more pictures when it's totally finished.
