Today was very productive! We completed the roof and got our floor in place.

Ridge venting. This is the gap in the ridge that we then covered with some leftover ridge vent covering from when we redid the roof on our house - so it was FREE (well technically we paid for it 5 years ago and found it in the garage!!

The floor is taking shape and we dug out under the coop to fill in with sand.

The floor is down! I decided that I am going to paint the floor instead of the linoleum I was thinking before - been reading the pros and cons and think the paint will be the way I want to go.

Wow just wow. for not being a carpenter your hubby has skills... FWIW I dont usually like raised floor coops. But this one I like a lot. My problem is physical mobility... but I could see some stairs and a landing up to access the coop for maintenence.

And thankyou for showing how to do the roof. I have been puzzling over this for some time on my own. I could do the wood part from underneath and on a step stool but could not do the overhead part where you have to climbe on the roof and fasten on the panels. Looks like I have to hire someone for that part.

Our plan is to have 2 steps into the coop with a full size people door and we are planning on making drop down panels under the coop on 2 sides for better access for cleaning out underneath. Trying to think of the things that will make it really user friendly. Hubby is an electrician so you know I will have anything electrical I want out there (and I soooo want an auto door

- but it is sadly not in the budget right now). We increased the plans from 5x6 coop with 12 x 6 run to 8x8 coop and 16x8 run so it has added about $400 onto the budget

This was originally a FREE project with AMEX points and $1000 in Home Depot $$

someone on another topic posted this so I thought I might share.

LOL skip two dinners out and you have your pop door. Hee hee.

Or if your hubby is into tinkering I betcha he could cobble something together with a small DC motor a regulator and a pully.... Jus syain.... add in a solar panel and a remote control... Viola... Hee hee.

I like how you think Perchi!! I was looking at the different kits/motors/rigged up devices last night and think by the time we get the chickens out there it will have the auto door. Lets hope today is really productive and I can have actual photos of walls to post tonight!

Today's work - we spent a lot of time on the egg boxes so they would be user friendly. 3 walls studded out - just one to go!

Here's the egg boxes taking shape! There will be 4 egg boxes and the access will be a hinged side that will have a safety chain on it and will open all the way down. Because of the raised level of the coop top access would have been impractical.

Above the egg boxes is a vent that we will cover with hardware cloth and a wooden door that we can open or close depending on the weather. Will this be too drafty over the egg boxes? I hope not but have no idea if this is a potential problem - anybody know??

The wall is ready for the window and it fit nice and snug - we placed it in the spot to see what it would look like

Ready for a 6ft door

That is all the work for today - think we will have a day or two off now - work is going to interfere with our coop building

Is your husband.... like... a perfectionist or what....

he even matched the angle of the nest boxes to the angle of the roof. I cant wait till I see the siding up.... Definately do colors that match the house... but if you want to get creative do some decorative items that hang from hooks.... flower boxes bright signs.... stuff that can come down when you are tired of it.
