building paradise for the birds

Pics
some food and a net....lol....and then a net over their coop so he cant freerange anymore.....hahaha...silly birds..who would have thought a bird that can fly would fly away

Kay, here are the promised pics of our pheasant and duck pens. Constant work in progress, as is most everything, depending on the need of the birds. But this is what it looks like right now...
Don't look too hard, we build it all with pallets and fencing, as we don't have the funds otherwise to build that elaborate and quick. Turned out pretty good though I'd say...

left side of the pens from the front. 3 more behind it, with the food storage/chick hut

the other side of the pens, 3 more stretched sideways

the right sides from a different angle

some branches for roosting in all

dog house for food shelter

and a shelter to hide in if they want to

our grow-out/juvie pen with the newly erected barn beside it

We built small houses/shelter in the big pens but as you said, the birds barely use it unless it is breeding season.
Then they sometimes start laying in the covered food shelters.

well got two of the walls done before it started to rain...so here is some pics
well the third wall is made and up just not secured into place....and the middle left wall is a 1 1/2" shorter so I have to add a board on top of it in the morning..i miscalculated....well cant be perfect everytime I guess...

female red golden just wanted to help

I just didn't have an extra screw gun.....lol

they are not camera shy that's for sure

shes like I want that thing...as she pecked at the phone and my fingers

this is our pair of peach goldens....we got last time mom was up in Michigan

bird on right is the male and left is female...they don't get there colors until the second year

female on left and male on right

right when it started to get dark and sprinkle the birds perched on my third wall...

thanks mom for the organizer...as you can see im getting ready for breeding..i have to get more...for I am going to have a few birds this year...

hope everyone Is liking the slow but sure progress...I shall see you peeps later

Looking good! Your pheasants are enjoying their new coops.

thanks tommarow I am going to be picking up the rest of the wood for the coops and the rest of the stuff for the large incubator...some of the stuff has already came in the mail today for the incubators just waiting on the rest...maybe by the end of the weekend I will have some eggs in the incubator....well see how it goes
ANYONES THOUGHTS ON USING ZIP TIES INSTEAD OF THE SPIRAL BANDS....ALOT OF GREAT BREEDERS I KNOW SAY TO NOT BOTHER WITH THE LEG BANDS AND JUST USE THE ZIP TIES....ANY THOUGHTS

I like zip ties...got to check them often as the youngers grow and change them out when they get tight tho.

Seriously think about how you're going to deal with snow on those tarps, just tenting it probably will not work if you get any significant accumulation.
Might want to put some 'rafters' up under the tarps and buy or fashion a 'roof rake' to keep snow scraped off.

Hubby used reports ngs on the turkeys. They constantly fell off.
I use zip ties on chicks. They work amazing. Just have to be sure to check as they grow that they do not get too tight. And change the out when needed. And a toe nail clipper works best for cutting the end. And cutting them off too :)

I agree with art. Hubs built us a smaller scale pen for the chicks to protect them from the hawks. And wound up putting some rafters under the tarp for snow. The first winter it had a board break from the weight.

well I have a roof rake that is like rubber that I will be manually doing the snow removal...and im putting a board in the middle straight up so the snow will fall on the walls and now the center...the only one im worried about is the 20 by 20 its going to be hard to get all the snow..but im taking faith on this one and hoping for the best...cant afford rafters yet...so I have to do what I gotta do ...which isn't so pretty but im hoping it works...and if it doesn't then man oh man lotof work for nothing...but im looking on the brighter side of things and saying to myself it will work till I get them

I plan on removing the snow when it falls...right now I can just push the snow up and it falls off the side but when we get more snow ill use the rake...and hope for the best....

well I got 19 eggs today...and you can tell the birds are cold...its like they are all statues ...but the birds under the tarped ones with plastic around they are all moving around...so I got the tarp and going to put that up and going to finish putting up the plastic around the big coop now...and I gotto clean out the snow...the sun is going to be shinning so that will help ...then build the doors and finish the two walls with wire...so off I go ....busy day....that's for sure..and on Monday im going to get two more lady Amherst hens from a well known breeder that hung out with louie b the guy that had the first peach golden pheasant....well have a good day and more importantly stay warm...cause im frozen...
