right now i just put the base of it down and soon i should be adding another 4-6 inches to the top...but i dont do anything for that...that is why i chose to use the sand and deep litter...i was told by several people that have pheasants that sand is the best bet and they have no touched it since they put it in...so this is my approach with all the birds i have to minimize my work with them so i can focus on the breeding and expanding part...so far it has worked...biggest part is to make it above ground...that seems to work the best...i did have standing water before the ground thawed and now that its thawing out its back down to just the sand .....works great i love it...the only problem im having is in the greenhouses with the peafowl i have to get the pens done so i can move them to ground and sand..i dont think they like it much in there now that its so much warmer out...i did have one peahen get frostbite on her toes and looks like they are coming off....all the other ones are fine...bummer...i knew something was wrong and posted it in peafowl forums about her limping on it...this year im building them heated perches for the winter....well out to work i go..just got back from the feed store and picking up some pheasant eggs...and also while i was doing that someone called looking for birds so i have some of my may hatch already gone...wow...hope it is like this the whole season....i would like to keep the males to grow out for two years so im not worried if i get a bunch of males....also the yellow golden male in my male pen...beat and killed another male today....so that was not cool to see....anyone had goldens be that aggressive....?Birdman, with your deep litter pens do you have a schedule for turning the substrate or do you let the birds chip in fir that part?
