building paradise for the birds

Birdman, with your deep litter pens do you have a schedule for turning the substrate or do you let the birds chip in fir that part?
right now i just put the base of it down and soon i should be adding another 4-6 inches to the top...but i dont do anything for that...that is why i chose to use the sand and deep litter...i was told by several people that have pheasants that sand is the best bet and they have no touched it since they put it in...so this is my approach with all the birds i have to minimize my work with them so i can focus on the breeding and expanding part...so far it has worked...biggest part is to make it above ground...that seems to work the best...i did have standing water before the ground thawed and now that its thawing out its back down to just the sand .....works great i love it...the only problem im having is in the greenhouses with the peafowl i have to get the pens done so i can move them to ground and sand..i dont think they like it much in there now that its so much warmer out...i did have one peahen get frostbite on her toes and looks like they are coming off....all the other ones are fine...bummer...i knew something was wrong and posted it in peafowl forums about her limping on it...this year im building them heated perches for the winter....well out to work i go..just got back from the feed store and picking up some pheasant eggs...and also while i was doing that someone called looking for birds so i have some of my may hatch already gone...wow...hope it is like this the whole season....i would like to keep the males to grow out for two years so im not worried if i get a bunch of males....also the yellow golden male in my male pen...beat and killed another male today....so that was not cool to see....anyone had goldens be that aggressive....?

ok update ....got the hoop coop wired in over the top with the hardware cloth....now just to do the door, pull the sides over ...secure tarp and move peafowl to bigger pen...then all the chickens that are in the house and garage that are big enough are going out there....ahhhh...time frame....

red golden posing for the picture

backside

wanna be silver golden saying hi to the other male thru the fence

curly posing for you on my arm

cinnamon golden male

chickens that were hatch about three months ago...the white rooster on the right is actually a barred rock...but with white feathers...it is something i will be keeping...i have never seen a bird like this before

cinnamon female on the left is about to lay an egg

you can see the females bottom side fluff out when she is about to lay the egg

see the bottom it looks like they drag their bottoms around when they are about to lay and they puff up

her laying the egg...you can actually see the egg...shortly after that she layed it

the peafowl just relaxing

well hope everyone enjoyed the pics....it was so cool to see the birds lay i seen actually two of them lay...and i seen for the first time the male mount the female (pheasant)....i didnt get the camera in time...bummer but i will for sure get a pic sometime...well off i go

Haha ive been privvy to a few lays. Kinda weirded me out at first. My kelso do the same thing with the fluffing. No dragging tho. The displaying peafowl look amazing you have such a fun assortment of birds. As always keep up the great work.

I know that the first time I picked a hen up and an egg fell out I was kinda dumb founded. It almost a moment of, what just happened there. Made ocward that we all know where eggs come from but seldom see the act.

Three or four times a day I hear my rooster pheasant cackle. I love that sound. Three more eggs yesterday..

Birdman, would you expect these kids to brood there own or would it be safer to just plan on baking them in the Bater.

I did set an egg that was laid out in the open. I found it the morning after I put them in the coup. ITS ALIVE.

i do miss the males sounds....he sounds off and then you hear...flap flap flap with his wings...he was my corner watch dog...he would let everyone know there was a cat or a coon or whatever out there...and then all the birds would sound off...i would incubate them...24/25 days and day 22 lockdown...cant wait they were such good birds...i will be getting the blue mutant ringneck for that pen maybe next week well see...when i caught them to worm them they were pretty calm as well...great birds...but the male without his peepers is one bad dude...he killed one of the hens when i took the peeper off...thats y i had to put it back on....i figured i would let him see the world but he lost that privileged...

He still gives the flap flap every time.

That answers it. I'll be bater baking them till I think I have enough. Then let the girl try.

If I keep track and Mark what I leave behind I can pull fresh any time so long as they are tolerant and keep laying.

So far they give a nice 2 or three every day give or take, but I'm pulling them about every 36 hrs.

I'm impressed we moved the birds and they barely had a hickup up in laying...

And pm an on me begging for blue mutant eggs when the time is right..now I'm back Into pheasant there is no end in sight ha ha. Phesant math.

You know I did NOT know female Peacocks displayed their feathers.....
