Hey Birdman, got any idea for a good meat maker diet for pheasant?

I have been reading and it seams to be higher protein and lower fat??

Any information you can add would be appreciated.

there are many types to look at...hubbard has medicated turkey starter at 26 percent, prince game bird starter is 28 percent, regular chicken layer is between 16-20 percent...you can use dog food as well...ground up...cat food...ground up...catfish feed...but has to be separated cause it has a huge protein value...most pheasants are so active that they burn off most of their fat...especially ringnecks....most pheasants are alot leaner for fast take off so you wont be able to bulk up the birds by any means...also during breeding season i feed my pheasants alot less protein...mixed with chicken layer...seems to work as you seen they are healthy...looks like the males are loosing their feathers during the breeding season...molting i hope....but great way to collect the feathers and i doesnt harm the birds...just got done building two of the hoop coop frames...so in the morning i am going to put up the cattle panels....getting closer to done...lol....NOT...we are getting a sweet plucker...and tomorrow we are butchering some of the new roosters and quail...some of the quail are getting picked on...time to down size cause next week the new quail are going to be big enough to go in the breeding pens...soon it will be full and ill have to get another one...hahaha...well time to relax and watch a movie....'hansel and gretel'..i ll have some more pics and videos tomorrow...busy today that is for sure....with all the transfers...also chickens are hatching as we speak...and tomorrow should be the ornamentals....wow populating so fast....need that plucker quick..

Catfish here to regular ration at the ratio of 1 scoop of catfish to 5 scoops of Pelleted feed.

I only use it because My birds arent allowed to forage.

Thanks Deb,

My chickens are in a 12 x 6 mobile coop tractor, they get moved daily to a fresh piece of ground, I usually don't supplement the adult birds diet unless something seems off with them. I do give the koi pellets to the growing birds. Although I have heard of it, I haven't really seen catfish food at our feed store. But I will be looking for it next time I am there. I'm guessing it is probably cheaper than koi pellets. If I buy my koi food at Walmart I get a bigger bag for around $5 cheaper than the feed store.

only problem with walmart feed is you dont know how long its been in the Warehouse... For what its worth you can order Koi pellets at the feed store. I was even able to get my feed store to bring in Mazuri when I wanted to give it a try.

Mazuri feed is what many Zoos use ... I ordered Mazuri game bird... for my guineas. Its designed to be a supplemental feed.

But I spoke with a woman here on BYC that raises Cassowaries... and she also raised Guineas. She told me to save the money and get Catfish chow. All with the idea that I cannot free range... and here in the desert the forage dissappears pretty quickly with several birds out there... They wind up foraging further and further.

back yard ... Sliding glass door is access to my bed room. Five white panels are my green house.

No grass... never was. its not soil but Decomposed granite.

My land is18 acres and there is not enough forage to feed a horse.

OUCH!

Things are green and lush pretty much year round in the deep south, even in the winter we still have green grass, just not as lush as in the warmer seasons. A few months ago I pulled up my neighborhood on Google earth, the pics were so detailed that you can clearly see the trail that my chicken tractor leaves behind. Kind of funny that my chicken tracks can be seen from space.

I love google earth.. I been able to locate all my corners ... property is ELL shaped... and estimate how much it would be to fence and cross fence.... OUCH is right... five dollars a linear foot for T post and field fence... to the tune of about ten grand...

straight across fencing wouldnt work any way. Too many BIG BUS sized rocks both above ground and under ground...
