a good rule of thumb for standard size is 3 sq feet per bird. so with 16 you should shoot for what 48 sq feet?? so mathmatically a 8x6 coop should do it. But if you are like any of us who have been doing this for a couple of years, you will want to go bigger so when the following spring comes, and you get the itch when you see the new chicks in stores, you'll have the room for more girls!! Trust me. I have 5 girls in a 6x4 and this is the second spring that I wish I went bigger.

Ok that wont be to bad to build. Im thinking of attaching a small run to it but For the most part it will be open during the day for them to run free in the backyard. I have read a nesting box will work for a few hens. Do u think 4 boxes would be enough?
