Built my own coop, now I have 6 chickens!!! eek!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your girls! Sounds like a nice family project. You've gotten some great advice above.

Thanks JDXX! My girls are excited (and nervous). They like the idea of making money but they are unsure about selling door to door... I assured them my friends will buy the eggs. It's going to be a great learning experience for us all. They already want more chickens so they can make more money hahaha

How cute, I bet they will do fine. Maybe if you look into doing fodder and fermented feed they could increase their efficiency for a little more effort.
I wouldnt try putting any more girls in your current coop. I love it though, good job. Our coops are also built mostly from recycled and scrap materials.I have been a carpenter for many years and I think you girls did a decent job.

thanks.  They seem to like it and I've already received another egg! day two! yippee!

That's awesome! Congrats and welcome!
The for-profit small farms around here just recently raised their prices from $3.50 to $4.00 a dozen. One is entirely organic and their chickens mostly range and are given some free choice non-gmo feed. We are in WV. If you are going to keep and feed them anyways and aren't doing a profit/loss statement lol...you could sell them at $3 no problem. In my guesstimating, $2.50 a dozen selling only my extra would cover all my feed (and give me free eggs).
Keep in mind that Egglands best and the cage-free eggs at the store that still don't taste all that good are $2.99+ at Kroger now. So anyone with any kind of desire for quality will be happy with whatever you decide. Just my two cents! I won't have eggs until later this summer so I'm not sure where I'm going to go with it. I have a ton of coworkers wanting thembut I'm not interested in just giving them away bc I'm afraid it will become an expectation that I can't always provide, plus I'm ranging and feeding non-gmo so I know they're worth money! Ha!

I think it's an awesome thing, what you're doing with your girls. Best of luck! :)

I agree with the co-worker thing... I am hesitant to give them away as well because of that. I do however have a lot of friends who have lent me a hand here or there and I have already promised them fresh eggs :)

With that being said I am so excited. I love my chickens... They seem calm and happy. :)

that's wonderful! :)
Yes, we will be supplying my mother in law no charge, of course, and family members and neighbors here and there too.
