HORNET AND IRONWOOD WERE FRIENDS?? NAHHHIt was a bright, sunny morning, with scattered puffy clouds floating high over the woody savanna.
Ironwood looked around, analyzing his surroundings. His parents, having left him at this place some hours earlier, would've been welcome company and support at this moment.
But they were gone, so.
The young Leafwing squinted up to read the sign above the pavilion that lead into a mini-hive of sorts.
"The Queens' School for Gifted Dragonets", he muttered aloud.
Gifted? Ironwood shrugged to himself. He didn't really think he was all that gifted. He just had weird hobbies.
"Hey nerd!" A voice shouted from a couple of yards away. A Hivewing dragonet sauntered up to him. "Catching any flies with your mouth hanging out like that? Or are you waiting for someone to find you a shiny little rock to chew on?" He sneered. "They don't come from the sky, you know."
Ironwood blinked and backed up slightly, startled. "Hey." He said, looking offended.
"Ohh, I'm sorry- did I make you feel stupid? Cause I'll-"
"AY. SHUT UP YOU BABOON." Another, smaller dragonet interrupted, coming up behind the former.
The bully turned around. "Excuse you?"
"Let him alone. What'd he ever do to you, huh?"
The Hivewing's eyes narrowed. "How 'bout you just mind your own business?"
"Like that's what you're doing." She snorted, rolling her eyes. "Roll outta here man."
"MAKE me."
The younger dragonet promptly grabbed one of his wrist stingers, twisted his arm violently and kicked him hard in the stomach.
"OOF. OW!!! Ouch, okay okay. Fine." He growled, turning to leave.
"There's more where that came from." The other dragonet snapped.
She turned around to study Ironwood for a minute. "You good?"
"Y-yeah, I mean, I guess." He mumbled. He felt nervous talking to dragons he didn't know. Especially this one, considering the display she'd just made.
"Don't let ol' Marabou mess with ya." She said affirmatively. "He's just a bunch of hot air."
The Leafwing shrugged and looked down sheepishly.
"Sooo..." the dragonet continued, "What you studying here?"
Ironwood scratched a little in the dirt. "Metalwork." He mumbled.
"Really?"
He flushed slightly. "I- I know's it's kinda weird and like- lame and all..."
"Oh, no, no. I think that's actually really cool!"
He looked up slightly. "You... do?"
"Yeah. Sounds like something I'd like to learn myself."
Ironwood smiled. "huh."
"Well- what are you here for, then?" He asked.
"I... want to learn how to make the world a better place." She said.
"Wow. Big goal."
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
The Leafwing looked up in slight confusion.
She laughed. "Oh, I dunno. One of the teachers said that one time. But- yeah."
Ironwood chuckled along with her. He liked this Hivewing. She was good to talk to. *Kinda cute too.* He noted mentally.
She suddenly turned towards him. "Here we are talking about school and whatnot and I just realized I have no idea what your name is." She facepalmed. "So, what's your name?"
"I'm-- I'm Ironwood."
She cocked her head and smiled. "Ironwood, huh? Got kind of a cool ring to it."
The young Hivewing extended a talon towards him. "Name's Hornet."
He grinned a little, shaking her talon. "Hornet, huh?"
"Yep."
"Y'know, I think you and I are gonna get along just fine."

The old dragon stirred in his sleep, groaning loudly.
Metalmark's eyes blinked open. "Are you ok?" He asked sleepily.
He was met with a barrage of unintelligible sleeptalk from the Leafwing.
Metalmark sighed. Ironwood had been having a lot of dreams lately, and witnessing some of them made the young silkwing wonder if they weren't nightmares. He'd sure been woken up quite a few times this week by his companion's restless slumber.
This wasn't like him. Ironwood had rarely dreamt in times past.
Maybe it had something to do with Cyprus' absence.
Whatever the case, Metalmark hoped that it would stop soon. This state of affairs made the old dragon more irritable and jumpy than usual.
Sadly, he couldn't think of anything that he could really do to help his friend.
They'd just have to ride this one out.
The Silkwing closed his eyes and laid his head back down, attempting to fall back asleep.
Ironwood moaned again.
However, none but katydids made any reply.
