Hey,

Looking for advice,

I got three backyard hens in April and now that we’re heading into a wet Irish winter I noticed one of my hens has sores on her foot(see photos) . I’m wondering what I should do for this? I soaked her feet twice this week in Epsom salts and wrapped her foot with a tiny bit of honey to hopefully clear infection, but I’m not sure if that’s necessary or not? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m also working on the hen enclosure as part of it got damp from consistent rain so we are fixing it up to provide the driest conditions possible. Thanks in advance :) -Catriona

Hi, Catriona, and welcome to BYC!

That looks like early bumblefoot, so maybe the honey will work, but I'd get a drawing salve too, like here we have PRID for one kind. I'd put that on and bandage their feet, changing that at least once a day. Soaking in Epsom salts before changing their bandage would be good too.

There's several threads here on bumblefoot if you want to read more about it. This article explains what it is, how they get it, and how to prevent them from getting it again.

Amazing, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I will try and get my hands on prod or an equivalent hopefully I can manage it before it gets any worse, especially with the weather here at the moment thank you so much again. Catriona :)
