Can anyone help with some advice on bumble foot. One of my hens is starting to get it and I'd like to help her before it gets too bad. I am a vet tech so i have animal medical experiance .
Any remedies or treatments that j can do at home would be great . Also , can she still remain outside ??
Thanks y'all!!

I have fortunately not had to deal with bumblefoot (perhaps I should add 'yet') but one procedure I've read here is to soak the foot in epsom salts to soften the skin so you can maybe pull the "kernel" out. Then I think you want to use antibiotic ointment and wrap it for a few days to heal up.

Ok, so this is what worked for me.
Step 1. Epsom salt soak.
Step 2. Washed her foot thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
Step 3. Liberally apply Prids drawing salve to foot and a cotton pad. (I used the sheet style that is often used on horses)
Step 4. Wrap with Vetwrap. Color matters. Bright colors get the flocks attention and is generally a pain in the butt. Brown worked best for me.
Step 5. Let her rock her boot for 24-48 hours. The worse it is, the more attention it needs.
Step 6. Repeat steps 1 and 2. But also attempt to remove the scab and kernel.
If you do not have immediate success getting the kernel out, repeat steps 1-6.
If you do get the kernel out, spray with Veterycin, pack the open wound with triple antibiotic and rewrap with vet wrap. Clean the foot and rewrap every couple of days until the wound is healed.

I've treated bumble foot twice. The first time took forever before we could get the kernel to come loose from daily soaking. The second time I only soaked twice, but used the Prid's and let it work for 2 days after the first soak. After the second soak, the scab and kernel came out nice and clean. No fuss, no squeezing the foot, nothing. So I'm convinced the Prid's is the magic sauce. 😊

Thanks for the "I've done it" information Jackie. Always best to hear from someone with actual experience.
For sure! I've been helped so much on here. It's nice to be able to return the favor. And I'm assuming you know not to use topical antibiotics with pain relief in them.
