I found Mimi looking like that. She's not limping, but I saw this and thought it might be bumblefoot? I also wonder if I should cut her nails? Thanks, Monika

So I've heard some people say that bumblefoot that isn't red and infected can be treated with soaking the affected area in epson salt and Vetricyn without having to do surgery. Anybody here have had success with something like that?

Yes, the first photo (below) she has Bumblefoot. I would trim her nails over the course of several weeks to get them back in shape and also treat for Scaly Leg Mites (rub some vaseline or nu stock underneath and into the scales of the toes/feet/legs a couple of times a week).

Second photo - see if you can dig out that debris that is the nook/cranny of the foot - likely that's just an accumulation and hopefully won't have to be treated like Bumblefoot (once the debris is removed the swelling on top of the foot should go down over a few days if it's what I'm thinking. To help remove that - soak the foot and carefully push/pull the debris out.

You know I feel really bad that I haven't paid attention to their feet. I was surprised how long her nails were when I saw that ball and checked it out. I've had her for 7 years and never had to do anything like that, so I guess it was just not something I paid attention to. Now you say mites? I don't even see anything there? Is that the black stuff under her scales? And by the way, thank you very much for the information!!

If she's older, then the raised scales may be due to age, but raised scales with debris under them a lot of times is SLM. The mites are microscopic so you can't see them, but they live under the scales of the toes, feet and legs - raised scales and debris (mite poop) is usually the evidence that they exist. If left untreated, the debris can accumulate and harden, cause difficulty walking and just make the bird miserable. Treatment is oil (vaseline, castor oil, etc.) or a cream like Nu Stock that is worked into and under the scales of the legs/feet - this smothers the mites and helps heal the legs/feet. Eventually the scales will be replaced.
