Two of my chickens in one coop, another from a different coop, and a duck, who also lives separately all have bumblefoot! All of it started after we built them large, amazing runs outside. At first I thought it was perches, so I switched them but after all of my birds got them shortly after getting runs I think it must be my ground outside. It seemed soft enough but did have some sticks and forest debris. We have since out straw down but I am wondering about the best substrate for outside. Can't keep bandaging feet!

Bumblefoot happens when there is an injury to bottom of foot. There can be more than one cause. A common cause is created when chickens make hard landings from perches considered too high. They injure foot, and the result is bumblefoot. Sharp things in run can also cut wounds in foot and same happens.
Straw should be a good run floor covering. I use lawn grass clippings in my run. I never encountered bumblefoot in over 20 years. I only keep a small flock of pet chickens BTW.
Here is a quick link to a thread with bumblefoot issues. You may benefit reading the solutions offered/suggested there.
