An antibiotic is probably a good idea. I sure don't like the looks of that swelling. Cephalexin is a very good strong med. I'd go with that. If I recall, it needs to be given for three weeks.

Chewable aspirin is a good anti-inflammatory. Tumeric is also a good anti-inflammatory.

Just gave him 500 mg of cephalexin and ~80 mg of aspirin. I'll reduce it to 250 mg per day for the next 3 weeks as well as split the aspirin into 2 40 mg doses. He took it like a champ

It turned out to be a tumor, possibly caused by Lymphoid Leukosis (though in an odd location, so might be unrelated). That's why it bled so heavily when I cut into it and antibiotics had no effect. It got really large and I made the decision to euthanize the cockerel.

Thanks so much for letting me know! I’ve actually been suspicious of cancer/tumor since the moment I saw it. I saw this thread though and was wondering if yours had actually turned out to be bumblefoot. Thanks again and sorry for your loss.

I just looked at the photos. You received a good response on the other thread, I think I would follow their advice. It is already red and irritated, so possibly an injury (not a tumor, like in my cockerel's case).

@Chickonafarm, I saw your thread too. That definitely looks like an injury, not a tumor. Possibly a rat bite as mentioned on the other thread. A tumor would bulge, have no puss, and cause a chicken not to respond in pain when cut or irritated.

EDIT: Also, a 2 month old chicken is unlikely to develop cancer unless caused by Marek's disease, in which case the tumors present themselves internally.

I’ll just post photos of how it looks now to avoid confusion. While it is infected for sure, I wouldn’t describe the discharge coming out of this as purulent as an abscess would be. It is weird to say the least. The original lesion to me looked like a kind of skin carcinoma. This could have allowed for bacteria to enter, causing multiple symptoms. We do not have rats, and even if we did, there is no way they could have gotten to these chicks. They go inside at night in a box with fresh hay and go outside first thing in a 4x8 pen lined with gopher wire. While I normally would have at least tried to treat this at the beginning stages (even with it’s odd presentation), I just couldn’t with my crazy life and decided if she makes it she makes it. I’m just curious if anybody has seen anything like this themselves. I agree cancer would be unusual at this age, but it can happen, especially if the genetics are right (and this is a brand new breed).
