BUMBLEFOOT Surgery, HOW-TO and causes of bumblefoot **GRAPHIC PHOTOS**

You're right. I didn't notice it yesterday b/c we were so busy focusing on the pad and swelling on the top of the foot. I'm just so concerned that we may have missed some of the infection by not digging deeper. It's hard to know. ???

Shockingly, my appetite was unaffected.

Very nicely done! If only all bumblefoot cases were this easy to get rid of. And as for anything under the plug that you need to get rid of, I don't think you have to. It just looks inflamed to me. Perhaps try an antibiotic foot soak to keep it clean and free of infection. When I dealt with a minor case of bumblefoot recently, I was actually able to completely cure it using just the antibiotic foot soak. It worked wonders!

I can watch it, but doing it is a whooooole different story!
What is the name of the antibiotic soak that you use? I'll definitely try it. How long do you soak the foot?
Thanks for the help!

Actually, I used just a whole bunch of wet Duramycin. I mixed it into a paste, and applied it to the affected area. Now, here's the fun part; you get to hold the bird for about 5-10 mins, making sure she doesn't eat any of the Duramycin. It's very strong, and could quite possibly be lethal in such a large amount. Unfortunately, holding the bird for such a long period of time can become tiring, but look at it this way; you get to hold your sweet baby and cuddle her. I saw a difference overnight, but then again; that was a little teenage quail. You might have to apply it pretty liberally to make it work.

You can pick up a bag of Duramycin at your local feed shop, and it's sold at a pretty fair price.

Ya, my Frizzle is about as cuddly as a porcupine, as you can see from her leg feathering alone. I think she's been over-bred b/c her feathers are like spears. Poor girl. So many issues.
I'll hit Tractor Supply tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!

UPDATE: I changed her bandages every night and reapplied Neosporin liberally each time. I removed the bandages entirely last night and she's as good as new!!

Great job! However because the area still looked a little swollen I'd try to get in there a little deeper again. That plug was pretty small and there may be more in there. To the folks who hate holding the bird in ater for the amount of time it takes to soften things up here is what worked for me. I bought a set of jersey knit sheets and it came with this cloth sack with the sheets inside. I took that sack and cut 3 holes in it and made a chicken hammock for my frizzle hen I rescued last winter (She had bad bumblefoot and scaly leg mites sooo bad). An old pillow case works well too. Cut a hole for the head and both legs, it keeps them from flopping about splashing water everywhere and seems to calm them down.
