Bumblefoot surgery turned into much more! And now Roo troubles! Gahh!

Well Star is going to have a long road before she's healed. Her side looks good, but isn't closing. So I decided not to bandage her today. I just tied a piece of cloth aroudn her to keep her from pecking at it. And her feet look the same as they did yesterday. For those of you who have been through this before, how long do you keep the bird away from the flock? And does there come a point where you just stop wrapping her/his feet?

And I cut Elmo's spur the rest of the way off. The poor boy was making the most pitiful noises, but he was a little trooper. With all the cutting on chicken's I've been doing lately I have to admit that cutting his spur off was the worst of it all. And it bled, and bled, and bled. But I got that all under control and I think it will heal quickly, as it's not a very large wound.

I feel like a chicken surgeon! Haha!

Airlith, you need "blood stop powder". I found it for horses at my feed and seed and for toe nails (pictures of cats and dogs) at my pet store. I'm not positive what's in it (can't lay my hands on the bottle at the moment) but it helps the blood coagulate. I assume it's the same as shaving septic pencils.

I just finished clipping chicken toe nails with the old cat/dog nail clipper. On Blackie's second nail, I hit the blood vessel. He bled all over my jeans and the whole way back to the house where I enlisted my children's help. We had to dip his claw several times in the powder for it to clot.* My chickens have HUGE nails! I hit blood on Miss Hamilton and Dirty Red scratched my hand. I'll do another check on the injured parties before bedtime. I'll have to tear myself away from BYC long enough to lock my big birds up. At any rate, I used the toe nail clipping party as an excuse to look at all the adults' feet to check for bumblefoot! (Can we say "multi-tasking? lol)

*I have a peanut butter jar lid with some of the horse blood stop powder left over from an emergency earlier this year. Middle Child grabbed that and we dipped Blackie's claw four or five times before it finally slowed down. Use a paper towel to wipe up excess blood, keep dipping, and pray, that's all I can recommend!
