Hello!
New chicken keeper here, I have 6 chickens, recently found one was limping and appears to have a case of bumblefoot. I began treating it 2 days ago and it appears to have improved as she is no longer limping as severel. In being proactive I decided to check my other chickens And found that at least 3 are in early stages of it as well. Based on my reading I was lead to believe that this is not all that common; however, if this is the case, what am I doing wrong that my girls are getting this? I use pine shavings and the have a 10 x 10 fort run that is primarily dirt - it was grass before the girls moved in. I saw one recommendation to use deep litter sand in the coop, should I try this an/or place a layer in my run? Any help would be appreciated!

I’ve only had one case of bumble so far. She had stepped on something, and it apparently got infected. I thought she was fine since she had stopped limping that same day, so I thought nothing of it until two weeks later when she was limping again and I found the bumble.

Common causes are perches not being smooth enough, wire or metal laying around, edges of hardware cloth where they can step on it, etc.

I’d heard it wasn’t super common but I’m up to 4 of my 6 girls having it. I’m afraid it’s something I did or they’re not getting in their diet and I feel horrible! I thoroughly cleaned it today and put sand down to replace wood shavings and the mud that they’ve created in their run. There isn’t any hardware they can step on, I am working on making the perches better but it seems odd that 4/6 have it. All in what appears to be varying degrees or levels of self healing. I just don’t know what else to do.
