Bump on Eyelid

Hello!

Yesterday when I went to give my ladies their snack I noticed Agnus stayed behind seemingly uninterested. I went to her and saw that her eye was halfway shut with a bump on the bottom eyelid. I took her in and used a warm cloth to clean the eye. That got the eye opened up all the way. I cleaned the bump lightly with Vetericyn Plus Poultry Care; she seemed to bounce back after that, and sent her on her way.

Today she was laying in the sun away from everyone and when I went to give snacks she didn’t want any at all. Her eye in the same exact shape it was yesterday. I took pics of before I cleaned her today and directly after I cleaned it.

Am I doing enough? Should I have her separated from the flock? What is the bump? I know it’s bothering her, she is usually chill but the lackluster attitude is not her at all…

She doesn't appear to have a respiratory infection and only one eye is curious. Perhaps she got pecked there and it's festering? It isn't in her eye either. It appears it's just on the lower lid of her eye.

I think if she were mine, I'd be doing what you're doing two or three times a day.

I'd also give her/them a vitamin/mineral boost by putting Poultry Cell in their water for a few days, then after that twice or so a week for a while, just in case they're fighting off something.

See if it starts going down in the next couple of days, and if not, she may have something else going on and may need an antibiotic.

Be sure she's eating/drinking fine too. Making a mash out of their feed sometimes is like a treat to them. Scrambled eggs is also a very healthy treat.

May I suggest you use Witchhazel & dab affected area with a Witchhazel moistened cottonswab/ball?
Apply it 3-4 x daily.
If it doesn't show signs of getting better after the 3rd full day of applications, it may be a more severe infection that may require a prescribed antibiotic.

That's not a bad idea either, as it's an astringent; however, I would not want one bit of that touching her eye itself, so I'd use it there with caution.

Absolutely. Only dab the bottom of the affected area. The underside of the bump..
If there is a "head" or an open area & if it's not too close to the top of the bump, make sure you get it in or on that area.
I have over 200 Bantams, notorious for eye issues & I use witchhazel @ least 3 x a week.

Thank you! I’ll bump up cleaning it to multiple times a day. I do have poultry cell so I’ll start giving that as well. I’m monitoring her to see if she’s eating/drinking. I was concerned about it considering she wouldn’t eat the treat mix I put out for the ladies.

I hadn’t thought of witchhazel! Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll put it towards the bottom of the bump. Unfortunately I think that maybe there is a head to it but it’s like right on the eyeliner. I’ll get a better look at it and make sure.

I don’t know what happened in the last 24 hours but it got so much worse!! It even started to look better but now here we are!
Do y’all know of any antibiotics that I could order or anything else that I can do to help her?
I have contacted some vets but I’ve been shuffled around to now I’m looking at the closest that’ll see her is 3 hours away.

(The dark on her comb is from medicine that I put on a peck sore from one of the other ladies)

Have you seen any bubbles or foam in the eye? The first picture looks a little like a fowl pox scab from a virus transmitted by mosquitoes in warmer weather. Is it warm where you are, or is it wintertime? Could it be pox? The second picture looks more gunky and swollen. Have you seen any other scabs on her face, comb or wattles? If her eye is gunky that could be a sign of MG, a respiratory infection. That can be treated with Tylosin in the water, and putting Terramycin or Neosporin ointment into the eye twice a day.

I would put terramycin on it, you can get it at tractor supply. Had a chick with infected crusty eyes once that swelled shut kinda like this and treatment with terramycin for a month finally solved it. You can be conservative with it because the tiny tubes of terramycin are kinda expensive.
