Hiya,

so one of my two ducks which i have been raising for almost 4 years suddenly started to grow/gain bumps on his bill a while ago. originally it started as a small bump (the one on the right) and i brushed it off as some sort of trauma from rummaging around in the backyard, shortly after a second one (the left) appeared. all seemed normal for a few weeks or months (i wasnt keeping track due to the hectic season) but today, i noticed a sudden and large change, the one on the right which had originally appeared first suddenly started to grow many mini bumps instead of remaining as just the one large.

i was wondering if anybody has seen or experienced something like this? im worried it might be some kind of infection and i want to be able to stop it before it grows again. my other duck does not have this issue whatsoever and i dont know how to approach this as its my first time raising ducks or any animal for that matter; despite being 4 years in haha. (also sorry for the terrible photo, he just wouldnt remain still in front of my camera )

thanks!

hey guys,

thanks for getting back to me and for the welcome! and yeah it really does look fungal also i went out to touch it a bit earlier just then, its not entirely soft but if i had to describe it feel, its definitely more soft to the touch. seeing how he was trying to get out of my hold i believe it might also be a bit sensitive to the touch.

presently i havent put anything on it yet in fear it might irritate the area or cause it to grow, but if it is a fungal infection i was planning to put maybe some vaseline and try to suffocate/isolate the infection.

i dont have any blue kote, iodine or antibacterial ointment at the moment, is there a certain brand you would recommend me to get and can these be accessible at the local vet?

All the above can be bought a pharmacy dept. or feed stores. Just be careful to use a qtip to apply so it doesn't get into his eyes or mouth or nares when applying.
I'd look for something in pharmacy that will kill fungus like what they use for athletes foot or similar.
Apply a good amount at night when you put them up so he isn't washing it off in his water right off.

Noted! Thanks Miss Lydia! I'll go check it out immediately.

Thank you for the welcome castropony and no unfortunately i cant, ive tried in the past when the same duck hurt himself a few years ago and contacted quite a variety of clinics but none of them were able to help offer me some specific help on ducks as they mainly specialised on domestic animals.

im presently situated in a suburban area of sydney, australia and im afraid that theres not many clinics that are close by at all which can provide help. :\

Keep us updated on how he is doing. Hopefully it isn't anything to worry about as far as serious. Blue Kote also will help with infection and fungus so if you can find that? it has gentian violet in it so be careful when applying or you'll be wearing purple for a while it does stain.
