Totally agree. However, I paid ~$15 for two ceramics. I think the brooder plate cost something like $80 at the time.

Totally understandable.
But I will say the brooder plates use less electricity. So if brooding frequently they save money. I nabbed one I really like for $55, it has 3 heat settings so I can compensate for age and ambient temp, and it's black so it's not so glaring in the brooder as yellow ones. 40 watts on high.
