Bunny Basics

Everyone has been so helpful, thank you guys so much!

With all your guys info I’m leaning towards an inside bunny. Could you share your indoor bunny habitats/homes, I’m not really sure what you call them. I’m thinking something like this that I found on Pinterest. Thoughts?

Yay! I'm glad you're going the indoor route! I don't have pics of my old set up. But basically she had a large cage with bedding and food, water and her litter box. Then the rest of the room was bunny proof. She would climb on my bed to wake me up, and she loved to lay on the couch. Her cage was for eating and going potty.

Awww how cute!

Good luck with your new bunny!

Be very wary of Instagram and Pinterest rabbit areas. These areas are always cleaned up and in primo shape for the photo. They don’t look that good without 2x daily cleaning. They will poop in lots of places even when litter trained.

If you’re going to free house your bun then rabbit proof the sh*t out of your house or they will electrocute themselves on a cord under and behind the couch or something.

They will go in a litter box if female or fixed male. Unaltered males spray like boy cats. They’ll *kind of* be litter trained. This is all an average. Each bun is different.

Males are often friendlier, but individual personality is much more important.

They can live outdoors without issue almost everywhere (I can’t say for you personally, because I don’t know Jack about Utah).

As in all things, people will tell you very polarizing things about rabbit care. “They have to be inside” “they must eat this food” “the have to be fixed”. Just remember to read a lot of online and book resources. Listen to everyone on here as well, but your rabbit vet is your best bet for 100% accurate info.

Also, get a rabbit vet and have a 6 month old well-bunny appointment. Have them established so if you need them in the future, they will know her.

Check online for sexing guides and look for a taco 🌮 or a burrito 🌯 ;)

I will say that checking Hoobly.com can guide you to a breeder in your area. If doable this is better than a farm store. Breeders (good breeders) have healthy buns and will be a great resource for you for the life of your bun. Farm stores can get their buns from factory farming type practices and will not be a resource for you. Sort of like puppies in a pet store. That being said, it’s not too bad to go farm-store. There isn’t as big of an issue with rabbits as there is with dogs, so it’s not a huge deal.

Have fun and welcome to the club!

These types of custom size panel pens are very popular on the rabbit groups I frequent on FB. They provide much more space than a cage or crate which is great.

Just make sure everything inside the pen is easy to clean. As LizzyJo pointed out, rabbits are messy. Even a fully litter trained one will scatter hay, pieces of their destroyed toys, and at least the occasional poop everywhere. They also shed quite a bit of hair.

One thing the pictured setup is missing is protection for the floor. Any pee that hits that rug will sink straight into that lovely floor. And rabbit pee is nasty. Caustic and high in ammonia. You can protect your floors best by layering. Bottom layer should be waterproof and scrubbable. Cheap off-cuts of vinyl from home improvement stores are an often recommended option. On top of that can be softer surfaces like foam tiles, mats, blankets, or rugs.

That would be awesome! Just when you have time.
I got some fur pics
This is standard type fur. Most rabbits have this long glossy fur.

This is rex fur. Much shorter.

I also got some good photos of an exposed vent, I can post them if you'd like. You could guess their genders and I could tell you wether or not your guess is correct.

Thank you! I appreciate all the info.

I have been looking in my area for breeders and there’s more than I expected. I was leaning that way anyways vs farm store. I just happened to see some at cal ranch today and snapped a picture for the kids. I like that with a breeder I know what breed and gender I’m getting. And like you’ve mentioned a healthy bunny.

I agree Instagram/Pinterest photos can be “staged” and not necessarily the real deal. I was hoping to see some BYC members indoor set ups. Anyone? I’ve tried searching BYC and haven’t found much.

So what’s the difference between the 2 besides length? Is one better than the other?

And sure I could guess genders, don’t laugh I might be terrible 🤣

FWIW here are mine. The top pic is of Niven’s corner of my living room. She hangs out there during free range time. The living room litterbox is in another corner. Note that this pic was take right after I set everything up and before she had a chance to mess things up.

Next 2 pics are more realistically messy and show the crate she stays in at night and when both DH and I are working in person. I telework a lot though so she gets plenty of exercise and attention on days I am home and after DH is home.

Other pics are just for cute and to show some of her other favorite spots.

So the second type is soft and belongs only to the rex breed. People love rex for pets. Because of the colors on that bin and the size of the bunnies I think they could be mini rex.
The first is a very standard hair type, if the bunnies in the bin have that longer hair type they could be a couple different breeds.

I bet you could! I'll post two examples.
