bunny survey

I raise Holland Lops (have had other breeds too) but really like the size and personalities of the Hollands. Not too familiar with Lionheads though so can't help you there. I would 2nd the advise from previous posters to really watch any rabbit you get when being held by a young child. They do scratch at times and can bite (even if just curious to nibble on clothing...not in aggression). Nails can be kept clipped so that will definately help with any scratching (at least them not being as sharp) but if your child is good with Animals and is properly supervised with a rabbit I would think all should be fine. My favorite breed although larger are angoras and english lops...both very docile in my experience.

I wonder if you could cap a rabbit's nails like you do cats.... We got a new puppy recently so the older cat is wearing claw covers to keep her from injuring the puppy until it learns when cats want to be left alone.

I have holland lops and my bucks are really great with my grand daughter who is going to be 3 real soon. She helps me feed them as well as my chickens. At her age though we do tend to hold the rabbit for her so she can pet it. Just to be on the safe side as I do know they can scratch if they want down.

I think its okay to get a kid a bunny but first do your research on the care and always supervise when the kid is playing with it. also teach the child that when the bunny scratches and bites tell the kid that the bunny is scared and he needs to be more gentle but even though the bunny scartched or whatever that it still loves the child!

We have raised rabbits for years and I am also the small animal leader for our 4-H club. Hollands are great and I would definitely recommend a buck, they are more laid back, less hormonal, usually enjoy the attention more. Another great breed, others have mention are the flemish giant, your daughter couldn't pick it up, but she could love on it, hug it, and play with it more like a dog or cat. Oh, one more breed that is excellent with kids, himalayan, we raised those for a while and never had a hasty one! Again though, I would always recommend a buck for a pet, especially for a young child, they are just more tolerant and cuddly.

Hello, I have raised rabbits for over 20 years now. We have several young children that get rabbits as pets. a 4 yr old is old enough to understand what's right or wrong so it should be easy to set rules. I would not going to a lionhead nor holland lop. We have had both and have gotten rid of them because we do sell a lot of pets to children. I would highly suggest getting a dutch rabbit

The one above is one that was raised here at my home and is because we handle them daily since birth (as soon as mom is done with them, we get right in there) they have excellent personalities.

You can look at our website and there's all kinds of information on there for new people. Of course, I am always available as well.

No you cant. Rabbits nails grow way faster than cats or dogs. You can keep them clipped and use a dremel to smooth them. The more the rabbit is held, the more docile it will be. Obviously, some breeds are more squirley than others. If getting a rabbit for a small child, I recommend the Dutch above all others, then, depending on age, Polish, English Lops, French Lops, Flemish Giants. You want to stay away from "Dwarf" breeds like Netherlands, Holland Lops, Brittana Petites (Brits), Mini Satins ... as they are known for having more of a high strung, BAD temperment. Our Hollands would attack on sight and they were out for blood!! Netherlands can be the same way. Now, there are exceptions to these rules but, always be prepared.

Also, purchase from a breeder NOT a pet store or shelter (when it comes to rabbits) as they do not spend the time needed to keep them calm, social animals like a small rabbitry would. You can also get a pet rabbit (here anyway) cage and all for under $100

But YES, do your research and when in doubt, contact a breeder.

I too am available whether you buy from us or not!!
