Burning trash?

When I was little we didn't have trash pickup. Me and my dad hauled it to the dump, and sometimes we took the neighbor's garbage. Now we have garbage pickup and just set it out. If the coons would stay away...

We use to burn everything but state law has changed. Now its a $25,000 fine for burning anything that does not look like a plant or tree. Even burning rough cut lumber is not aloud. An what you can burn requires a permit. Do you know how sorry it is for the state to make firemen go out an put out kids campfires because they don't have a burn permit....

A local guy bought a garbage truck an picks up for us for less than $20 a month. Thats less than I can take it off for just in gas.

you would be surprised what you can recycle and I dont mean at the city run places either.

the local daycare here will take:

cereal and other boxes for crafts
toilet paper tubes
paper towel tubes
empty (and full) baby food jars
meat trays but they MUST be disinfected. the daycare also rinses them in a bleach solution. the kids practice sewing and other crafts on them
coffee cans
magazines and newspaper

the only thing that goes to the dump is plastic from the cereal boxes, the wrap from meat, cat litter, *womens products*

we have a fellow that will come and pick up our recyclables for free.. as long as they are sorted.. i think he cashes the metal in and takes the plastic as a courtesy

We burn everything that will burn. That includes food scraps (we don't have animals anymore). We have a garbage truck stop in fromt of the house every Friday morning, but we save on garbage bags, and don't have alot of ants.

Are you kidding me? Why should I pay for the county to take my paper products (costs me 9 cents per lb for all trash and I have to take it there) if I can burn them in a burn barrel? That is nuts. They gripe about landfills filling up, then they gripe because you don't take things to the landfill. I'm going to burn my paper stuff and that's that. I'll take everything else. We have our own farm dump for stuff that the county wants more disposal money for. I can pay $25 per month for someone to come once a week, but since I burn my paper stuff, I only take garbage maybe once every five to six weeks and that costs me way less than $20.

I'm with speckled.

Just a little FYI, there are still places in this country that have no recycling programs in place. I live in one. We burn as much as possible. The rest goes to the transfer station, where it is then hauled to the landfill.

You know I hate living in GA because it's so screwed up. I blame Atlanta. That city is the ruination of the entire state. We have to pay for everything that's wrong with Atlanta.

We are supposed to get a burn permit, but I figured that was to burn brush, like in a pile, not in a contained metal 55 gallon drum. My next door neighbor has bonfires weekly, I swear. He burns and burns and burns just to sit around a fire.

Here we have to have a burn permit mainly because of the high winds we have. We also have to call the fire department and give our permit number and address before burning. They will refuse permission if the winds are too high.
