I count horn combs as a buttercup variety

Buttercup is allelic with, but recessive to duplex V. Duplex V is the allele D^v, while buttercup is the allele D^c.

As I said, I know the difference but I count horn combs as a type of buttercup comb

They are different alleles that express in differing ways, so I guess to me it's still worth noting those differences when puzzling out what is going on with the chick in question

Do you have any history with any V-combed breeds in your flock?

I have two Polish hens but I have never hatched their eggs... I tried to last spring but they weren't fertilized so I did bother trying this spring.

It's verry easy to understand about the butercup comb and the cronecomb with la fleche ore other crested ore uncrested chicken. Look at the nostrils. Buttercups have normal nostrils. All other have deformed nostrils
