Buttercups

Beautiful birds, about the same size as Leghorns, good layers of white eggs, VERY FLIGHTY!

The Buttercups are already so jumpy and flighty. They are only about 2 weeks old and they are attempting to fly out of their brooder. I have decided to only keep a couple of these. My friend is going to take the rest as she has a huge enclosed run. She didn't want any chicks but when she saw them, she changed her mind. It will add to her flock of layers.

I know it is a tough thing but I had to get replacements.

This morning, I went to TSC to buy some corn for the ducks and they had a new shipment of chicks. I got 4 Wyandotte pullets. That should be enough for now.

I'm so glad you started this thread. I was really considering getting some just b/c of the uniqueness. But, I really want birds w/the temperment of brahmas & rocks where they don't mind & even LIKE to be held & pet sometime and are easy to clip wings, and round up after free ranging....I am already about to try some penedesnas, which may be flighty...

Well, I am curious about the jungle fowl. A few weeks ago the picture of the week here was of a flashy cockerel, and it was submitted by ...something about saving the jungle fowl, and I had never heard of them. I guess I could search them.

i have one buttercup hen (my avatar pic is a photo of her) and she is my FAVORITE chicken! she isn't flighty AT ALL - she is the most social of all my flock (she lives with several silkies). when i go into the coop she comes right up to me and if i sit in my chair out there she will usually fly up to my arm/shoulder/lap etc. she is chock full of personality - super curious and "into" whatever is happening at any given time. she is also beautiful! i never get tired of looking at her. in terms of size . . . she is bigger then my silkies but smaller then most "standard" size chickens. she lays great eggs and does so frequently.
if i were you i'd hang onto the buttercup hens and see if any of them "blossom" in terms of personality - you never know - maybe one will turn out to be your best chicken friend!

I have the son of Fallen's buttercup. Dad was a silkie. Oliver is now 6 weeks old a complete sweetheart. He runs to the front of the dog crate when I come in the room to be let out, then hops up on my knee. He just started crowing a little. I'm hoping he isn't too loud because I really want to keep him!

The first Buttercups I ever had ( from McMurray) were the first chickens that I had that flew up on my shoulders so I have a soft spot for the breed.

I wanted to maybe start breeding them, but myButtercup rooster died this winter

and I'm thinking that until I get more income I need to stick with the Dominques-they're more dual purpose, and that's what I need.
Last year I got some Buttercups from Stombergs and they were much more flighty than the McMurray ones so I'm thinking that the source you get Buttercups is important. Some strains must be more flighty than others.
Sigh...maybe someday when I get more income and space for chickens I can develop a strain of Buttercups that aren't excessively flighty and lay well....

I got 4 Buttercups with my collection from Cackle and of all the chicks, they are the most curious, first to come check things out and are less afraid of me than the others. (I couldn't handle them much when I forst got them, cuz I had the flu for the first 3 weeks)

I have a Sicilian Buttercup and she is adorable. Very friendly and very unique with her dual crest. Mine is from Privett Hatchery and I'm very glad I have her. She is one of my favorite hens!! I named her, what else, but Buttercup!! I think that there are always exceptions to every rule and I had nothing but good luck with mine. She lays white smaller eggs about the size of a silkie but is very consistent.
