Binki
Songster
I've given him his own fenced off area. He's quite cheerful at the moment. He healed quickly, and he's up and running.
Before I gave him his fenced off area. I tried to just pair him up with a female. When I did it the female with him opened her mouth and said hehehehehe. Then she started chasing him( I've tried every female). Why are they doing this?
There's one quail that's the size of my females, and he mates like a chicken (chasing and mating with everything he sees). The rest of them just mind their own business. Another thing is that the same quail is out to get the hurt one. He pecks the wire trying to get the hurt one.
On a happy note I have a nice little silver male that sits next to the wire and peeps to him, having a quail-conversation!
"Opens her mouth and goes hehehehe and chases him" - I've witnessed my coturnix hen doing this - she will get all stiff and crouch a bit and open her mouth - then she will keep the mouth open and start "chittering" while her bottom beak flaps open and closed!! Sounds like an angry chipmunk!!
She will then go spastic and chase around the other quail, but not actually attack them so I think it's a dominance dance or something - LOL! I think I have it filmed.
She will also get jealous when I'm petting one particular other hen and will walk tall (soooo funny - standing straight up with their neck outstretched in front of them and walking with fast little steps while keeping their high head still - have seen the males walk tall to show off to the girls) and then dominate her by jumping on her back and pecking at the back of her head. This is actually harmless because she doesn't actually peck hard or bite the feathers to cause any damage.
I would know by her behaviour when it would happen and can easily intercept her walking tall with my hand and "hold her back" but if she persisted after the hand block I would address it by "tanking her", putting her in a quail outfitted aquarium I use for the hens when I change their cage. She can see the other girls and only stays in there several minutes to stop the behaviour, it also never happened when I wasn't petting and sweet talking them

They all have personalities like you've said your one male is just aggressively running around all the time bothering the girls, there is a chance though that he's charged with hormones which is influencing his behaviour so he could calm down later with just one girl and no other males around if that's what is getting him extra excited xD
