Hi i have had 10 button quail eggs in my incubator for about 19 days and on the 15 day i put them all in water and only one moved. I have been keeping an eye on the one egg but i have heard no chirps or any pips. I am a bit worried so is there anything i can do to check the chick is still alive ? Please reply.

You can still candle to see if they have pipped internally but try to keep the egg in the same position as they are lying in the incubator as much as possible. A slightly cooler temperature can delay them. It may be that you just aren't seeing the pips so I always wet my hands before handling them at this stage just in case they have pipped.

If the foetus has died it will sink towards the narrow end of the egg and there will be a watery gap between it and the air cell. If they are still full and dark and the air cell has developed a slant then they should still be alive. That's if you can see into the egg - my 2 favourite colours that I keep lay brown eggs that I cannot see into past 3 days of incubation (other than monitoring the air cell size), which is very frustrating.

Sometimes they pip internally and then stop for whatever reason so when you candle, that little shadow beak in the air cell should move (wondering who turned on the light). I like using my cell phone flashlight as its the perfect size for little eggs.

You can also hold the fat end up to your ear to see if you can hear any tapping, but this is less reliable as you can imagine that you hear something.

Eggs only wriggle as the chick turns in the egg to get into the correct hatch position so unless you look at just the right time you won't see it. You also won't hear them until they hatch as they are so teensy. I've had one that never made a peep throughout the entire hatching process (I did keep taking it out to check on it as at the time it was more humid outside my incubator than inside it so I figured I was safe). I didn't hold out much hope and it took forever to hatch, but once it finally popped out it was just fine.
