Today I noticed that the foot on one of my female button quail was incredibly swollen. The majority of the swelling is on her shank, just above her foot (only on one side), and is filled with pus. It extends downward to her foot pad and just the bottom of her middle toe, though all four of her toes are black from loss of circulation. Her scales are falling off from the swelling on her shank. I have been raising quail for years and have never had this problem before. I do not raise them on wire so is it possible that she may have cut her foot somehow and it got infected? If not does anyone have an idea what it could be? Can it be treated?

BTW I do not have a camera right now so I don't have pics

It sounds like a injury. try cleaning the wound with warm water, using a clean sponge to drip onto the area or a syringe to squirt it on then use some hydrogen peroxide or other cleanser but not iodine-based. You can get a topical antiseptic from the pet or feed store and apply it as well, just be careful the bird cannot eat it. DO NOT use gauze or other bandages. If it gets worse I would take her to the avian vet. good luck

Thank you so much for replying! I have done everything you suggested. I also have her on an antibiotic right now to help ease the swelling. It may be an injury that got infected. It came on quick whatever happened because when I left for work she was fine. She is with a partner though so it's possible they could have gotten into it while I was away. At any rate, I'll keep an eye on her and keep my fingers crossed that she gets better
