Im afraid I am very tempted to open one up to see if there is a baby in there at all , I hate flying blind .
Oh well we will be going soon to the school to check on the progress of the babies that are hatching there

If you shine a small flashlight through the air sac you can often at least see if there are veins or if they've broken into the air sac. On very dark shelled button eggs this still will not work but I have been able to tell at least half when candling before I stop turning.

If you do decide to open one take something with a good point and lightly tap the very tip of the large end until it chips. Be careful not to go too deep or you could hit a chick. Make the hole big enough for tweezers and very carefully break tiny pieces off until you can see something. Don't break too large of pieces or the egg could split down to where the membrane attaches and break a blood vessel. Then you've most likely just killed anything alive in there. If at any point you hear peeping stop and put it back. If you get to the point you can see the membrane and there is a live chick that hasn't broken the membrane I would cover with a damp paper towel, put it back, and wait another 12-24hrs. I highly do not suggest trying it though. I tend to get impatient so I have done this several times with late eggs or the time an entire hatch didn't start until day 20. You will most likely kill at least one live chick the first few times you try it. Unless they are really late like end of day 19 to day 20 I would not even think about it.

If you stopped turning them on day 13 so they could settle and the humidity is high enough they are not sticking to the membraine you should be fine!!! Don't fret

I would wait till day 22 even before you start thinking you wont have any babies

Happy hatching!

As of this morning we have one VERY loud baby button.
I went to bed at ten pm last night to a squeeking egg and this little guy woke me up a bit past 5am , how can such very small lungs make such big noises.
Worst case scenaro he is only hatcher , he needs a stuff and a mirrior?
Do quail pine away and die if they are by themsselve like chicks do soemthimes?
Im getting more button eggs in about a week which will make the babies about 4 weeks apart if they hatch when can I put this button with them?
Thank you

Oh and these are banty eggs so they are about 1/3 to 1/2 the size of a normal extra large grochrey store egg, the probe in there is about an inch long so that lets people have a bit of an idea of size.

Also yes you can put newly hatched ones in with 4 week ols however that one wont pine away as long asyou are there to snuggle with it for the time being. Makes for a very tame buttonquail
