Which is the best for a pet? I hear that coturnix are tamer but it that really true? Are buttons impossible to hand tame even when hatched out from eggs and socialized from that point on? How much bigger are coturnix compared to button quail? How much more space do coturnix need compared to buttons?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't try to hand tame buttons. I have heard sotries about it being done but they are stress cases and it can cause health issues, egg problems, etc. Coturnix are much large in most cases but and I think they are less stressed but none of these are hand tame birds exactly. Not like parakeets and lovebirds anyways.

I have once had an incredibly tame coturnix. I wouldn't say the same for all, as that isn't true, but I bought her as a mature female but she would free range around the place int he day, follow me everywhere and then go back to the coop at night

Coturnix are about three times as wide and two times as long as buttons, i think.

Though, personally, don't expect quail to be tame, because 99% of the time, they aren't

To sum it up in a few words buttons are crazy as a bat and coturnix are calmer and aren't near as crazy

for the most part anyway...i have 1/2 dozen white Coturnix that are as high strung as my Buttons are. My brown Coturnix on the other hand are much calmer and frequently run to me making happy greeting sounds....

opposite for me- 2 of my whites are my tamest

Agreed, my Texas A&M whites are too tame! They peck, climb and attack my hand when fed, and there is absolute riot in the cage when they see me coming. I never did anything to encourage such behaviour.

They are naturals at it. I think whites would make great pets, no taming necessary. Browns are not that obnoxious, but they could be easily tamed too.

Never kept buttons, it would be too much work to eat them. LOL

I would say whites or browns are the tamest. I have given older ones away for the very reason, to be a pet. I have one pharaoh as a pet and he is a hit. I find him in my luggage, in front of the fridge, crowing at the tv. Love the coturnix. The big ones can be pets too if they don't reach a human mouth first
