buy, ship, use marek's vaccine?

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering how to keep the chicks that will hatch under my broody hen in 21 days from not being exposed before I vaccinate them? She is in the pen in a sectioned off area for her privacy.

I know I am answering in a pm but wanted to answer here as well.

you cant really protect chicks when using a broody.

Maybe if you batthed the broody and used a new pen that had never been around other chickens but it probably would not work. I dont use broody hens for hatching for just that reason.

But remember the Mareks will not effect all of them many (usually the majority) will develop a resistence on their own, although that depends on the strain you have i your area and remember Murphy's Law dictates that it will almost alway be your favorite that gets it bad.

Boy what a dilemma............The chicks we have, were purchased from the local Wilco Farm Store and they have not been vaccinated for Marek's (according to store personnel). The people there don't know or have any way of finding out whether the chicks were hatched with older birds or not, though I would suspect that the chicks are mass produced in a hatchery.

If the chicks have already been exposed to Marek's, will it harm them to vaccinate them now. I understand that once they have it......they have it. But will vaccinating them be the safe solution?

Our chicks (Golden Sex Link Pullets) will be two weeks old on Monday 5-30-11 and as of today, appear to be happy, healthy and vigorous.

No, I never really received an answer....But the good news is All my Girls have grown up to be wonderful productive "Citizens" and they have been giving us a dozen eggs a day with regularity.

Hope someone sees this, will the post being old.... If I give Marek's disease and cocci vaccine the day they hatch- -will that be over doing it? Could I drug them to death? Hatching me first chicks :)

well this is an answer to the last question, which was posted last yr.
but hatchery's that vaccinate give both cocci and Mareks to day olds before shipping

also, it wont hurt the older birds but according to MSU vet, giving older birds the vaccine is a waste of time cause they have most likely already been exposed

my dilema right now is chicks under a broody, I plan to vaccinate them as soon as possible and hope for the best

So I hatched some that are 3 months old now, all my others have been vaccinated from mypetchecken. I didn't know I could vaccinate so the ones I hatched haven't been. Is it worth it now to do it? They have all been together the whole time since they were all young and a new flock. Should I vaccinate the ones in the incubator I have going now when they hatch? Thanks so much.
