Buyer wants to re-turn thier hens

Agreed. The few birds I have sold from my home are placed in a cage for the buyer to inspect away from the rest of my birds. I really don't like to let walk on visitors near my breeders. I say do these birds suit you. If so money is exchanged and birds are transfered to buyers cage. All sales are final. I would not take any bird back.

Absolutely, you tell them that you will need to quarentene the birds now, because there is definately bacteria in their soil your birds have never been exposed to- as well as the possibility of other chicken diseases from their poultry. They can EASILY put those birds on craigs list or in the want ad, and get their money back. Ask them to try that first.

Oh, I see you have already resolved this. Good for you!

Two thoughts here. My husbands friend is a vet is a bunch of bs. If he was such a friend they could have asked for a vet report and he would have provided. Also she flat out told you that she didn't properly care for the birds by providing proper shelter so if they are sick she most definately had a huge hand in causing that. My diagnosis is that the buyers were idiots.

If these people only want their money back ($50.00) it does not sound like a scam to me. Now if they want the $50 back plus gas money plus vet expense and anything else they can come up with, then yes I would say they were trying to scam. It sounds to me like they just changed their minds about the birds and want to return them for what they paid.
I would not take them back unless they can provide a vet report stating that the birds were sick at the time of purchase.

I raise goats and have a clause on my website where I will not take goats back in refund. Reason being is that I don't know what they've been exposed to once they leave. I test my herd and do not want to take an animal back who's ill or exposed to something just to infect my whole herd. Too much hassel. So all sales are final.

Some people don't know what they're getting when they get it. My advice to them is to do research before you buy. I hate people who just get something and then once they get it home realize what's involved and immediately bale out. They shouldn't have animals to begin with. Animals are fun, but they're not all fun and games. They're a lot of maintenance, work and $$$ involved. If you're not up for the whole package don't buy.

Ok, off my soapbox now. I have also encountered someone (from selling goats) who I believe has conned all her goats out of other people. She tried the ploy with me and I took a police escort to her place and collected my goats. I cannot stand con artists.

Do not let them return them Tell them you have a closed flock and anything that goes out, stays out. This sounds like buyers remorse to me and they DID pay too much for these hens.

I had an old couple that wanted 6 birds. I quoted them a price and one of them agreed. I held 4 hens in the nursery which is parasite and desease free for over 2 weeks.

I get a call from the doctors office they were at (this is why i waited two weeks) and the lady tells me she can not make it to the farm. She asks me if I could Deliver them to the office so I thought and told her ok, I had to go to town anyway.

The OLD FART then told her that he was not going to pay that darn much for those hens and demanded I deliver them, get less for them and be happy about it.

I told the lady he was an old FART and to go to an auction if he wanted to pay that kind of money and live with what you get.

Then she had the nerve to ask me where she could find such a thing. It was then when she heard a "click".

Just one more thing. NO vet is going to "do a favor for a friend." NO vet is going to even look at a chicken if they are unfamiliar with them. Poeple do get pretty full of crap and some are indegnant, prideless, ungrateful and on top of it all STUPID.

Sounds like you have already dealt with it......

But my two cents anyways.....

I'd have refunded their money

Told them to keep or dispose of the birds... if they're sick and picked something up somewhere I wouldn't risk giving it to my other birds

Changed my selling practices to include a written receipt with all of my stipulations.

Chalked it up as a lesson learned

I have to comment on this one. The grain store is full of poop. Chickens dont catch colds and Terramycin is pretty useless. It doesnt guard against anything and doesn't cure much at all.
I would have a policy from now on that you inform everyone of that says any bird that leaves your property never returns, that all sales are final-who knows what they may have picked up at the other place, right? Put it in writing and hand it to every customer.

I absolutely agree....I would be very fearful of bringing them back to your farm......you have no idea where the birds have been and what they have been exposed to......... even if you decide to refund the money..... (right or wrong)........

using antibiotics as preventive medicine?...............mistake...........no fault of yours obviously......you have been given misleading information........this will do your birds more harm than good if they truly do get sick at some point and need the help of an antibiotic...... though, I am not a Veterinarian...and this is only my personal view on this subject.......

I agree 100% that you should not take the birds back. As a former standard poodle breeder, I have seen to many times where someone takes your beautiful puppy & totally ruins it & then wants a total refund! No different with chickens & what they have been exposed too.

A contract or some sort of agreement is a great idea, we do it for our dogs, horses & goats. Just covers your hiney.

Also the local TSC store told me that when they get their baby chicks in they automatically give them terramycin & electrolytes, because you just never know. That is what the clerk said. Why medicate if they are not sick? No different than you treating yourself for bronchitis when you don't have it. Not meaning any disrespect either!
