Update! Well, after 60 eggs (bought off
ebay from seven different sellers), $300 and two months; here are the results. .......(drumb roll)..... SEVEN CHICKS! That's $42 a chick.
I think it safe to say that buying eggs off
ebay is risky business at best. I did everything humanly possible and followed every rule of hatching to a T. Out of 46, from seven sellers, 6 eggs from one seller hatched (out of 12) and 1 egg from another seller (out of 10). Eggs from three sellers did not even start to develop and only one or two eggs from the remaining two sellers started to develop.
After intense research, experience from people on this forum and excuses offered by the sellers I have narrowed the cause of this massive failure down to these few reasons.
1. Lazy stags.
2. Sterile Stags.
3. Racist Stags (likes some hens better then others).
4. Hens too young.
5. Hens too old.
6. Hens too fast for Stag.
7. Malnourished hens.
8. Eggs were washed.
9. Eggs were too old.
10. Eggs not stored properly.
11. Eggs were x-rayed.
12. Eggs were got too cold during shipping.
13. Eggs got to hot during shipping.
14. Eggs were dropped during shipping.
15. USPS used box for soccer practice because it was marked "Fragile".
16 Eggs were not healthy to begin with.
I am sure there are more, but you get the point. The bottom line is that there are many things that can ruin the eggs before you even get them. No body since the history of artificial incubation has devoted the time an resources to their eggs that I did. My advice is; DON"T BUY EGGS FROM
EBAY!!!!
