might be worth re considering if you are wanting different breeds. I would think it might be hard to find multiple breeds about the same age in our area...just a thought...

Thank you so much for all of your help...
I was at the Agway yesterday but didn't see Ashley. I got some helpful info from the lady in the store.
I did end up seeing a few ads on craigslist and i am waiting on some responses. I hope to hear from some. I think that i am going to try to get 2 Buff Orps, 2 Plymouth Rock and 2 RI Reds if i can only because from what i have read they are good egg-layers, good with kids and winter hearty... I am definitely open of other types I just don't know much about them.

Do you shop at the co-op? I have never been there and was wondering if its worth heading to this week to see what they might have?

I REALLY appreciate your offer to let me borrow your chick supplies, I would love to if i can not find pullets before summer is over.

The Golden Comets are Red Sex Link laying machines and would lay better for you than the Orpingtons, Rocks, or RIR. As far as friendly and good with the kids, they would be just as good as the Rocks and probably better than the RIRs, but likely not as good as the Orpingtons. Still, if you don't mind a mixed flock, you could get some Golden Comets and Buff Orpingtons. If you do get the Golden Comets, just make sure they are hens. Their body color should be primarily reddish with some white feathers in the tail. If they are primarily whitish, with some reddish saddle feathers, they are roosters. They are likely females (if they are being sold as such) and you shouldn't have any problems distinguishing the sexes, but it's surprising how many people end up with roosters even in Sex Link chickens (it shouldn't ever happen).
 
Pretty sure he has as many as you would like and yes he handles them. Probably not as much as wedo our pet birds but they should be quiet enough to acclimate to regular handling. I got some older ones a couple years ago and didn't take long at all for my then 4 year old to be carrying them around lol and btw they are def hens, started laying recently. Tues is Ashley's day off -call any other day and you wil get her. As far as the co op they are great for supplies, I don't think they have any chicks left and honestly I have not heard great things about their chicks, they never look very healthy in their brooder and I have seen some dead ones in there too so I would not buy livestock from there. Kathryn, I am just seeing this message now. sorry for not responding sooner...
I found 10 week old chickens on craigslist in Woburn, so I picked them up on Saturday and they are so cute... I have been doing some research on these kinds because i wasn't too familiar with them. But they are female (I hope) and oh so adorable... we have had them a few days now and are just the cutest thing ever! my nephews 5 & 8 have turned into quite the Chicken Farmer!! I will post pics if i can figure it out.

This little one is Pip, i believe she is a black sex link, but is much smaller than the others, so I am not sure if she is really 10 weeks. My neighbor says they seem smaller than 10 weeks.

The 2 on the left are Willow and Hester, they are Silver Laced Wyandottes, the barred rock on the right is Piper
 
That's great! Congratulations , you will have a blast with them! We started with 4 chicks 3 years ago when my son was 3, they are all still thriving but chicken math struck and a new larger coop and run was built for our 8 new chicks. He is now 6 and LoVES his girls. Your nephews will love this adventure. I'm def not an expert but not far from you,(ipswich/Hamilton) soif you ever need a hand shoot me a message.
