no the answer to life is a number of chickens that you can afford. I would start with 100

Well I did my chicken math. I got 6 chicks to guarantee 2-3 hens. Well sorry to burst your bubble. All 6 were roosters.Ihad to get rid of all of them and start over.I'm just 4 months behind schedule for eggs. I went to the hatchery and got 3 pullets. 95% accuracy. 5 weeks later. They are still pullets....

I am raising Red Stars and Golden Comet sex links. I love it that I can tell as soon as they hatch if they are cockerels or pullets. I also have RIRs but I have to wait on them until they start getting their combs and wattles. My hatches average about 50/50.

Boy, sounds like this chicken math is very hazy:) I was going to go with the 6 chicks until the last post about 6/6 for roosters. I don't want to get these from a hatchery - I want to pick them up. At this time of year, my only option is from a local farm. Maybe I should do the 12 chicks:) I enjoyed reading everyone's posts! I will have to let you know how things turn out.

Chicken math really isn't about ratios of how to guarantee male/females it's more like a way to justify having hundreds of chickens. lol.

I started with six and after my favorite and only silkie chick died I HAD to order another silkie. Well I soon found out that you cannot just order one chick, there are minimums. So I figured up that if I order 10 chicks from Ideal I would meet with the $25 minimum. After a little more chicken math I decided I should order 15 to make my numbers at an even 20 chicks. Then after a little more chicken math involving which breeds I really wanted I wound up ordering 20 chicks bringing my total number to 25 chicks total.

When my order came in I only had 19 chicks instead of 20 and then two died. So now I'm at 22 chicks. My neighbor who gave me the original 6 chicks is coming over tomorrow to see how the chicks have grown and to see our new coop and run and hinted that she might bring along a few more chicks for me. Which I will explain to my dear boyfriend is totally justified because they will be replacing the three I lost

lol. Well, I must have been confused. But, I think mine counts as chicken math since I am trying to get 2 pullets, but will end up with more, especially if I take the hubby and kids along. Then, we won't have the nerve to get rid of the extras and will continue to add on:) We started out saying 4 hens. Everyone laughed. I see why. I also want to try out some Faverolles and then some one around here has Sussex that are awful cute, etc, etc!

You will want "X" breed, but you have to HAVE "Y" breed..and it would be cool to have "X" color of eggs, but you MUST have "Y" color of eggs...OMG and those silkies are soo cute......yeah good luck with 2!!!

Take if From someone:rolleyes: who Didnt even PLAN To get chickens.. who now has 13!!!!.when this time last week I HAD NONE excpt for a Stray chicken who comes to visit us...

That's what happens when a Broody hen takes up real estate under my porch and hatch's 11 eggs I didnt know she had there.

so 1 week ago tomarrow I had NONE and as of today we have 13 LOL!
even thou I intend to adopt out all but 4 of my new Chicks.. so I'll only have 5. left..
So I'd never say you only want X many of chickens. beacuse you will end up with Tripple that LOL!!!.

and I can't help myeslf I'm already PLANNING on coop designs to house m Future boods.. as being im gonna have a total of 4 hens and 1 rooster. I'm assuming I'll have MORE babies by this time next yr

If you're waiting on chicks to hatch it's a 50/50 chance. If you buy from a trusted hatchery, you can be 95% sure. That said, I bought from a trusted feed store that dealt with a trusted hatchery. I wanted 3-4 so I bought four. So far, so good.

Yeah, that is how I ended up with Ameraucanas, a Welsummer, and a Barred Rock. I wanted the blue eggs, I wanted the darker brown eggs, then some more normal eggs. I really wanted one of those marans that have chocolate brown eggs. But, my dh wanted feathered feet so we are getting the few cochin for now. Fun Fun! I am already perusing craigslist looking for another coop or something we can convert into a coop. Ours will only hold 7 comfortably:)
