Well I would definitely encourage you to respect their wishes. They don't want you getting hurt, taken advantage of, or in trouble for some reason. The Internet isn't inherently safe unfortunately... It's scary not knowing who could be talking to your kid online, there are people out there who wouldn't hesitate to lie, manipulate and eventually even threaten you to get things.
