BYC Aquarium Thread

Good question. Im not sure but ill ask next time im at the LFS.

I know when I worked at the store we always had folks bring in their huge oscars and midas cichlids, lots of pacus from petsmart that got too big as well. Normally we'd sell them for $20 and the Asian folks would buy them to eat if they were big enough

I don't think I would want to eat aquarium fish. Alot of the chemicals used for water maintenance, and medications are absorbed into fish. Some even will accumulate and stay within the fish, and they are known to be toxic or cause cancer in humans. Not to mention most aquarium fish are riddled with parasites unless they are being treated with a dewormer every couple of months.

I'm sure you can eat them, and have little to no problems. But for myself, I wouldn't want to. Especially with seeing how polluted fish wild-caught are these days...and aquarium fish must deal with chemicals on a more regular basis just for general maintenance.

EDITED TO ADD: In South America Oscars are prized for their tastiness, they are suppose to be similar to Tilapia in taste.

I wouldn't doubt it, there's many invasive species across North America now from people releasing their pets.

I bet they'd put up a wicked fight though!!! I hate netting full grown Oscars the most, you get absolutely drenched every time.

my sea aquarium was a total disaster..it was given to us as a present (all up and running) but something somewhere went wrong and it crashed big time. managed to save 2 clowns and a damsel but lost all the corals and crabs/shrimps/snails

so we got some new live rock and set up a nano aquarium (29 litres) for the 2 clowns.....its going ok but the zoas won't open

(they were in the big tank when it crashed) sea aquarium was a lot harder than we thought it would be...
