BYC Book Club - Fresh Eggs by Rob Levandoski

I felt it was far to contrived and ridiculous in its attempt to make a political statement.

I was horridly disappointed and so put off by it I most likely will never read anything else written by the author.

Did I say the premise was ridiculous???

Completely ridiculous.

I agree, Miss Prissy.
But I read sci-fi fantasy and was willing to suspend belief for a good tale. But he just didn't do the tale justice.

And he certainly didn't make any real political statement, either.

So, a girl has a 'psychological' reaction to the way her father keeps chickens. She is so emotionally traumatized that she sprouts feathers (much like stigmata being a reaction to the suffering of Jesus). I was with the story until the end. I actually did enjoy it, if you took it for what it was, a fantasy/fictional work. I thought it was funny that she staged her own death by making it look like a predator attack. The book did make me think about how farming for profit is done. I thought the characters were fairly well developed, the father as chicken farmer without the necessary emotional stamina to be a father, the frail/allergic/ineffective stepmother, unable to conceive. The farm hand that was able to see past rhea's feathers to the person within. I didn't get the point of the book that the shrink sent to Rhea, that she read to the chickens. I don't know what, if anything, the book signified. There was some other vague things that I was unclear on as well...

But what the heck was up with the ending? I agree that it seemed like the author ran out of steam. I reread the ending a few times and just couldn't figure it out! The farmer and the stepmother show up for the wedding of rhea with a baby....which I assume was rhea's clone? The baby was swaddled up (to hide feathers??????) I don't get it. Did they have a feathered baby? Did Rhea learn what her father had done? I'm lost!!!!

Did anyone get the ending? It's been a while since I finished and I loaned the book to a fellow BYCer. Anyone????

Like others, I felt that the book started strong & lost steam. I was almost as if the author sorta caved to editorial rewrites or something. There was a great ambition/spirit to the beginning of the book that did not follow through.
I was super-disappointed to see Rea become such a unsubstantial adult. Also: the author made maternity a major theme, but his take on it was really shallow. Motherhood IS powerful & Levandoski failed to convey that.

awwww im sorry you guys didnt like it..

i really enjoyed it . well everyone has different tastes . but i DO think it would have been better if the author devided the book into 2 books, so he could inclued more detail, and not end the book so abrubtly. but other than that i think its on my top 10 favorite books. well if you have any other books to suggest i would love to read some... OH i ammmm reading another book that has to do with chickens

but it is strictly fiction with a bit of mythalogy in it. its called the Dun Cow.. i dont know who its by, at the moment .. the book is in my locker at school

so if ur into that kinda stuff its pretty good. and by what i have read so far its pretty discriptive.. and its abut the battle between good and evil.. i like it so far.

give it a try if your bored and want a book to read, it did get some kind of award if that makes any diffrenece... so go ahead. again sorry that u didnt enjoy it.

I enjoyed it enough to buy copies for my mother & brother. It was a light, fluffy, easy read.

I almost stopped reading when the girl first grew a feather but got hooked when she visited the Dr. I agree that the first half of the book was better than the last half. There were plenty of odd transitions and scenes that didn’t aid the storyline but overall I thought it was better than a lot of modern fiction.

Well, I loved it and hated it! Very disappointed in the turn it took - fair's and cloning? I don't know what I expected but not the way the author went. I agree with Miss Prissy. JMHO
