Would it be plagerizing if we quote and gave credit to publications? like the APA

What if all of our breeds had a small excerpt from the standard and we could have a reference page giving all resources their due mentioning?

My 2 cents: If the primary goal is to give information to people keeping or wanting to keep chickens in their backyard, I think including the breeders' standards is probably superfluous. Adding links to breed standard pages is not a copyright issue. Why not start with Wikipedia, which has a huge amount of history and other information about a ton of chicken breeds? The text and photos on Wiki pages are free to use under the GNU license—which means basically that if you use the information, it needs to be freely available for other people to use too. I think the members of this forum have a wealth of relevant information about how each breed is suited to backyard purposes: personal stories about temperament, egg production, predators, neighbors, interactions with children, etc. that Wiki does not have. That's the info that people combing this site will be wanting, I think.

Its says right inside the front cover of the APA Standard of Perfection that you can use the text for the purpose of educational sharing if you give them credit.
The drawings cannot be used.

Thanks Charlie, this is something we really need to work on and I'm excited to start really pushing it, getting volunteers, and allocating resources (time, programmers, contests, whatever).

Yes, the templates will be editable for sure. They will be more like a guideline that can be used to insert information and pictures.

I would like to help by doing a breed page on Javas....and anything else you need me to help with.

I am sorry if any of this is repetitious.

1. Pictures should come from our own flocks whenever possible. The best picture for each breed , using the SOP, for a guide should be posted. (ohh I feel a contest coming on here.

2. Copy right infringement laws, these can be a problem because this is a for profit site. However; if the information is educational and you reference where the information was gathered from, you are not infringing on copyrighted material. In other words , this being a chicken site, it is appropriate that we have a section that describes what each breed looks like, and since the governing authority of that is the APA, then it is only correct to use that information, referencing them as a guide. However , if you were to copy verbatium the paragraphs that going along with the description, that would be wrong.
So
Back size = Short
Neck = Long
Hackles = full flowing

Ok . The paragraph where they go into a little more detail, origin of the breed etc, wrong.

I was actually part of a research team , where I work, that worked with our lawyers on this issue.

This is from the US Government web site on Copy right

Whenever this is worked out, I'd love to do the pages for the Modern Game Bantam and the Old English Game Bantam. I can also do the Wyandotte Bantam and Cornish Bantam unless someone else really wants to.

The template idea is great. But may I suggest adding a breed facts section? Something similar to this?

Breed Facts (Modern Game)
Disease Resistance: strong when cared for properly
Cold Tolerance: poor, hard feathered, anything below 35˚ F is too cold
Purpose: ornamental, exhibition
Productivity: EGGS – fair MEAT – poor
Personality: curious, flighty, arrogant, playful, affectionate
Cage Tolerance: poor, needs large cage
Egg Shell Color: tinted
Class: ABA – Modern Game, APA – Game Bantam
Recognized: yes, both clubs
Varieties: Brown Red, Birchen, Black, White, Lemon Blue, Silver Blue, Blue, BBRed, Blue Red, Golden Duckwing, Red Pyle
Weight: C – 22 oz. H – 20 oz. K – 20 oz. P – 18 oz.
Temperament to Other Chickens: aggressive, selfish, will integrate

For people short on time, that'll sum it up!
