Well, I am still pretty much a newbie with chickens but here is my two cents. I am a city dweller with kids. This was what was important to me when I spent months researching everywhere I could on breed pages, charts, and forums.

1. Temperament
2. Egg Production (I wanted a general #, not just poor, fair, good, since I had no experience with what was "fair" or "med." as a newbie)
3. Egg Color
4. Egg Size
5. Purpose
6. Feathered Footed
7. Size in inches or Lbs.
8. Quiet* or Docile?
9. Broody
10. comb type

* I noticed I was not the only one asking for answers about what breeds are good for an urban or suburban area and who wanted possibly quieter or docile breeds of chickens.

Here's my list for the urban chicken-owner:
1. Friendly - enjoys/seeks out human contact
2. Easy to handle: docile
3. Moderate to high egg production
4. Medium & larger eggs
5. Hearty
6. Doesn't fly
7. Not prone to broodiness
8. Hearty
9. Tolerates small spaces
10. Appearance


DBF's list:
1. Friendly temperament: Ease of handling, bears confinement, seeks out (or doesn't avoid) human contact
2. Egg production - med to high
3. Heartiness: resistant to cold & disease
4. Not aggressive to other chickens
5. Tolerant of rain (i.e. preferably not feather-footed, silkie, or frizzle)
6. Quiet

My dream chicken for the urban chicken-owner:
1. Litter-trained
2. Large, daily eggs
3. Poop doesn't attract flies
4. Only does the Egg Song between 10a & 3p
5. Repels urban predators: raccoons, possums, dogs, and humans
6. Trims the grass rather than destroys it
7. Doesn't eat plants that are growing in the dirt
8. Never gets mites
9. Lets itself out of the coop quietly at 5:30a

1.Temperament(That is why I have seramas)
2.Size(Again seramas)
3. Cold hardiness(Not seramas)
4. Trainability(For harness training. Seramas are the only ones so far that will let me train them)
5.Comb (Not too big, affects cold hardiness)

7. MUST be good foragers
8. color/size of eggs
9. egg laying abilities
10. how well they fly

Interesting and wonderful feedback!!

I see temperament is on most lists toward the top. While there is quite a bit of subjectivity here, I believe (like in breeds of dogs) some tend to have different dispositions than others. For example, buff orps tend to have a very different personality (in general) than a leghorn.

I noticed not a single request for "weights" of either adult or adolescent males/females. Interesting!

Keep the ideas coming!
