When I lived in Texas I was into butterflies... planted lots of butterfly weed for the monarchs, and dill and fennel for the swallowtails.

I would catch the monarch caterpillars and feed and hatch them inside, then release them.

There were bunches of those parasitic wasps that would take out the caterpillars if they stayed outside.

swallowtails were hard to hatch inside.

Anyone else seeing lots of Monarch butterflies ? Appears to be a good year for them around here.
We don't really get monarchs up here. Mostly just months. Even if we did have them they'd be long gone by now.

I remember about 11 years ago driving through the Mojave during spring migration. By the time I was through my vehicle was completely orange.

Here is the area we have been cleaning up. 20170929_191156.jpg

The coop is almost done! Windows and running netting and tarp over the run is all that's left!!! We painted the poop tray, nesting boxes and floor today. I think I ended up just as painted as everything else. The way they built the boxes left a lot of nooks and crannies on the ends. Thank goodness I have long arms. Still, they ended up whiter than they already were.
We're planning on moving everyone on Monday (including the 3 buckeyes I'm buying).
