BYC Café

How many pounds of meat do you get from an average NN IM?

The cockerels were 4 to 5 lbs dressed the first time, but we haven't processed any more yet. The heaviest was the one we kept the longest.

However, I have the Dorking/Red Ranger hybrids that are my meat birds.

I'm hoping to combine them in the future to get larger Nn. They don't have to be huge, but a little bigger would be nice. I want to limit our consumption to 1 chicken a week for us and the pups.

That's more than I expected. For some reason I thought they were smaller than they are.

My jersey giant crosses are huge, they're 7 weeks on Sunday and squatch was NEVER this big as a chick!

I'm hoping the dress out to be about 5 lbs if they're more then I'll be happy with that!

This is Hurry, Ruffles's last chick.
The first picture captures her attitude. The camera lens has done something strange.
Hurry is about to start laying eggs. She's been nest hunting with dad (Cillin) for a few days now and crouched for him for the first time yesterday.

This is more like her usual self.

This is Mel's boy Tyle. He's very game fowl looking; not so obvious in this picture. Somewhere the Old English Game genes have resurfaced.

There was a wide range of size in my chicks because they're really just mutts. I have a rough idea of some of their background but it's not complete. The person I got the eggs from is also breeding for the same thing, a bigger bird. I know she added in Jersey Giant and Bresse genes and I have both out there.

This was them at the chicken swap on Sunday and people were in shock. I honestly didn't really see it until I saw other 6 week old chicks.

I got an Easter Egger mix and an Orpington mix that are the same age. They are so much smaller!

The have big breasts too, I don't know why. Maybe I never noticed it on other chicks :idunno

Adding Jersey giant to them definitely will make them big!

JG are slow growers so waiting as long as possible to process will yield a higher weight.

He's so pretty! I love the game bird appearance.

I don't know if mine will be slow growers. So far they're the biggest 6 week old chicks most have seen. Maybe it's because they're crossed with other breeds.

Someone told me if you mix Delaware with anything that they'll be huge. I mixed Delaware with my jersey giant :D The biggest one isn't here anymore he was sold on Sunday, but maybe I'll weigh them soon.

I find it quite amusing that many of the supposedly pure breds one sees on BYC are really just mutts. Nothing wrong with mutts, I've got lots here.
Fat Bird is the last proper Marans.
