BYC Café

I attended my first Native American Pow wow last Sept. I wanted to learn beyond what my mentor had taught me. As a result I subscribed to the Pow Wow thread and I get updates sometimes 2-3 a day about culture, etc. I love to learn and eagerly digest everything I can read.

The most recent update concerned a show on PBS regarding Native Americans who recruited to branches of the service in numbers far greater than any other groups of people,to fight in wars against foreign countries. Native Americans have not received the best treatment from the government but they are guardians of the earth and did not want foreign concerns trashing it .

Certainly school hadn't taught me any of this. Nor anything else about Natives Americans. Much like the Black women who could out perform computers to arrive at safe co-ordinates for the early astronauts' successful missions. (Hidden Figures- the movie left everyone in the audience saying "we never knew that."

Never knew of Native soldiers fighting for our country. I did know of the Navaho code writers that left the Germans stumped. This even though our government put natives in schools and wanted them to forget their language, and culture. Forunately they never did.
Wow, it's interesting you didn't learn that in school DD. By the time I was in school we learned a lot about the Code Talkers, went to a Pow Wow, etc. Of course back then schools actually educated kids instead of teaching them to do well on tests.

Good Morning all.

I usually get on here and do a bunch of reading....which is not a bad thing, but I thought it might be nice to get to know a few folks. Thought the cafe' would be a good place to start.

Hope you all are having a wonderful morning!

Welcome to the cafe Susan. There's always coffee or tea and often some goodies floating around too. And welcome to BYC.

Do you have chickens?
