In small quantities in purchasing yard we have used pesticides too. But on our farm, we do not. It has actually sold my dad that there "Might be something to this organic thing." He was amazed to see all the butterflies and variety of birds we have here on our bit of land (the University actually came out and did a study that found we have over double the variety of birds, then a pastured land in the same zone non organic) I don't know that what we do is healthier, food wise, but it is tastier. And not having my children out playing in fields sprayed with pesticide is a relief. That is how this started for us, we have a field 50 ft from the house FIL did not want his children playing so near the chemicals. This was back in the 70s and there was a small movement of organic farmers he had heard of, so he thought he would give this new fangled fad a try. He was shocked, it worked. The organic slowly grew until it was the whole farm.

Amazing post. I love this. Just found your thread today. Moving from NW Louisiana to Vancouver Wa was a real eye opener for me.. Down south, no one was interested in gardening or organics. There is a vast array of fruits and veggies. Now to find me a small piece of land to set up on. It will be an interesting year.

It will be fun to hear how you grow. There are tons of books about returning to country life, let me know if you want recommendations

Hi guys,

Sorry just had to tell you that Pietie passed away this morning - he just couldn't fight anymore. We made it to the hosp just in time - I don't know what I will do without my 'rock' but have to carry on for kids (big kids) but kids just the same. Even the dogs are miserable I have all the cats and dogs on his side of the bed so not completely alone. We were so positive - Life really sucks sometimes. xxx
