Hello @ChickenCanoe. How have you been keeping? My breed of chicken is from Catalonia. Vilafranca del Penedès
It is close to freezing every night here.
Bless you. They are good well below that thankfully. It has been down to -28C here and all lived with huge ventilation. Some frozen rooster combs and wattles but they recovered and the hens seemed nonplussed but not disconcerted. They fared better when it gets to 43C.Hello @ChickenCanoe. How have you been keeping?
The Penedesenca should be okay down to -6C or so because it gets that cold where they come from.
That's pretty cold. I assume they are in a coop at those temperatures. I was thinking of those that roost outside as some do here.Bless you. They are good well below that thankfully. They are tough birds.
Tough climate in which to select breeds.
They are usually in a coop but with huge windows on both east and west walls with the wind blowing right through. Some occasionally have chosen trees instead. They do well till taken by an owl or raccoon. That's pretty cold. I assume they are in a coop at those temperatures. I was thinking of those that roost outside as some do here.
The coldest recorded temperature where I live was -11C and the chickens here, even the pro tree huggers, headed for the coops at roost time. Most years it doesn't get much past -2C or -3C and that's only for a few nights usually. They are usually in a coop but with huge windows on both east and west walls with the wind blowing right through. I understand that. Most of the Floridians, Californians, Mexicans and Costa Ricans I know choose more moderate climates. I have a friend living in Puerto Rico who can't take 50F. When I was in the Army in Louisiana, I made a trip to Houston to go to a concert. I was hitchhiking and a Mexican guy from Brownsville (southernmost part of Texas) picked me up. I was wearing a t-shirt. He was wearing a big winter down coat. He said it never gets that cold in Brownsville. That's too cold for me!
