BYC Café

Never underestimate the power of asking for other people's unwanted junk to save the day.

I'll be building the seasonal room on the back deck in the next few weeks. I have a 32x12-ft Trex deck. Dumping shingles with nails in them onto said deck is going to destroy it if I don't protect it somehow. Hence the idea to put carpet on the deck backing side up.

Carpet is ripped out of people's houses on a daily basis. Getting a hold of it is an entirely different story. So I created a post on Nextdoor.com and somebody just replied and has lots of pink carpet for me to use to protect my deck. Yay! :ya

We bought our fridge, washer, and dryer used when we moved in 27 years ago. Delivered, installed, the three for $500. We replace the washer. The fridge and dryer are still running fine. Fridge has to be 35 years old. It doesn't owe us a thing.

Yeah, I know it's an electric hog. But I had seen 2 (!) fridges come and go in the 12 years I was in my job at the last location. Ditto with the dishwashers.

They really, really don't make 'em like they used to.
