very true.....

now we do use our composted manure, and the shavings from the coops.....but I'm not opposed to doing a little miracle grow bloom booster, after the first harvest of veggies to get that second or third harvest......

in the garden while we have veggies, no roundup or other weed killer, except the kids pulling the weeds.......but I did use it, the first time along with chemical pre-emergent.

I'm not opposed to using pesticides either.......so maybe we are just Org and not Organic........

Careful use of most things is almost always the best way IMHO!
Don't just grab the sprayer as the 1st option.

In small quantities in purchasing yard we have used pesticides too. But on our farm, we do not. It has actually sold my dad that there "Might be something to this organic thing." He was amazed to see all the butterflies and variety of birds we have here on our bit of land (the University actually came out and did a study that found we have over double the variety of birds, then a pastured land in the same zone non organic) I don't know that what we do is healthier, food wise, but it is tastier. And not having my children out playing in fields sprayed with pesticide is a relief. That is how this started for us, we have a field 50 ft from the house FIL did not want his children playing so near the chemicals. This was back in the 70s and there was a small movement of organic farmers he had heard of, so he thought he would give this new fangled fad a try. He was shocked, it worked. The organic slowly grew until it was the whole farm.

"We have purchased small quantities of pesticide for our yard"

For the farm? nothing, plants grow just fine. We rotate our crops, Alfalfa, clover, corn, soy, wheat (not in that order) we have smaller yeilds, but much less overhead costs (hiring hose planes to come out and spray your field is incredibly expensive. We do usually hire someone to come out and rouge our beans, but that is it.

Gotta warn ya - almost anything from Rodale Press is a "gateway" . . . .
