I bought an apple tree today, you may laugh but we don't get apple trees on the highveld. Then I bought fig tree as well, so been busy all afternoon planting.

Margie, I hear you on the weather - I used to do the same. Catch the forecasts on all the local news channels, get the latest from the National Weather Service, then go stick my nose out the door and plan my day based on what was actually happening at the time. You have some brutal stuff going on there; hope everybody stays safe.

Whoop,lovin' your birdy buddy, also that garden. I hope you have windows that let you gaze on it even when you can't be out in it!

But as to the fire danger - cold, dry air can allow static electricity to build up, and you can get a spark where otherwise you wouldn't. Fuel sources (things like wood) can get tinderbox dry in cold air, so they catch fire very easily. You might not think there'd be a heightened fire danger in the cold, but there is. Add that insane wind to fan the flames . . . .
